Porsche Crest First Porsche - 1999 Carrera

After years of reading this and other forums...mostly this one....I finally obtained my first Porsche - a 1999 Carrera that is in remarkable condition. I need to take some better photos! The color is an interesting 40X - Vesuvio Gray Metallic - it seems to change hue in different lighing. This one is a tip, which believe it or not I was looking for: a concession to a bad back on occasion, plus the wife can drive it. 80K miles and it's been dealer serviced locally. I'm getting with them for the records, to see if the IMS had been tended to. H&R springs and Billstein struts make for a great ride height and handling.

We've had it a week. Loving it so far.

Great looking car! I usually only like dark or black wheels on lighter cars, but it works on yours.

Thanks! I normally am not fond of black wheels period...but they do seem to work here. Came with brand new tires, rotors, pads, etc.

Congrats! The first 996 that I looked at was that color, absolutely loved it! Mine is Ocean Blue Metallic, which I also love.

It's on the schedule. The seller only had the car about 10 months, so he had no records. The car as been serviced at the local dealer since 2003, so I am checking with the service manager - who I know personally - to get the service records and see if they have already dealt with the IMS bearing issue.

I advised my best friend to do the IMS when he bought his 2003. He procrastinated, rolled the dice and his number came up. We just swapped his engine 6 weeks ago. $12K.

THAT is what I call motivation. I was told that the dealer has been checking the filter and pan at oil change time, and since the 1999 is not as high on the risk scale as the mid-2000 & later M96 motors, I'm keeping the miles - and revs - to a minimum until I get it into my trusted local indie to have an LN solution implemented. Since its a Tip, the trans has to come all the way out for this. Labor is going to be a killer....but not 12K worth!!!

FWIW - PCA has a good video on their web site now that explains the history...and agony...of the IMS issues. Good info. On any model it's a risk...one that I am not willing to take. I want to keep this one running until I can no longer drive.
