Is a 996 Turbo an upgrade from a 930 ?

Which do you prefer, the 996 Turbo which happens to have all wheel drive, liquid cooling, 6 speed transmission, and modern ammenities. I used to think the 930 was the end all be all, but after I got to drive a friends 996 Turbo, I was smitten. It is a sweetheart of a Porsche. I think the Turbos are quite removed from the standard 996 Carrera line even though those are quite good too.

What are your thoughts? If you could trade to a 930 straight up. Would you ?

I've driven the 930, the 935, and the 996 turbos, and there is no comparison: The 996 turbo is a major improvement over the earlier cars.

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. A 930 as an investment is a pretty good idea. 996 turbo is starting to get some credit in that department. A 930 has some serious turbo lag, which has been eliminated in the newer cars. I drove a 930 4 speed car back in the day, and you could do freeway speed in 1st gear. 4th gear and it was lugging. Straight up trade - for investment and cool factor - 930 every time. Better car? probably the 996, but subjective, for sure.

I've had a highly modified 400hp 1978 930 as beautiful as it gets, and I've had a stock 2003 996t. I still have the 996t. There is no doubt that the 930 will live on forever as a very significant car in the automotive world, but when it comes to comparing performance, comfort, value, usability....it is not a fair comparison. The 996t is overall a much better car. I loved the 930 don't get me wrong. But can't compare the two and think it is a fair comparison.

Please consider maintenance. The owners threshold for pain, money and annoyances will edge the 930 ahead. Radiators, coolant pipes, and parts costs has not helped my 996tt experience.

Coolness: 930 and 965 anytime.
Sheer fast speed and modern get in and drive: 996T

The 996 will cost more to keep.

996 technology is major upgrade compared to that of 20 years prior. Both are sweet rides but 996 for the money is good value and plenty fast!

I own both.

For me, while the 996TT is much more car in many ways, the 930 is orders of magnitude more enjoyable to own.

I can give you lots of reasons, but at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

The 930 feels and drives like no other automobile. A raw sports car from a bygone era.

The enjoyable qualities of my 996TT I could find in a couple dozen modern cars.

2 completely different cars
maintenance wise it probably ends up more in 930 due to lack of parts plus if you need rebuild a 930 engine its $$$$
996tt properly maintained is pretty trouble free plus the coolant pipe thing is way overblown, having owned 4 of these only 1 had them done while engine was out and none blew them off ( total of around 70k miles between 4 cars.)
As is exhaust note this is simply subjective topic., both cars are amazing.

The curves on the 930 are great to look at - and they are truly two different cars from two different era's - but everything else about the 996tt is superior. They are remarkable cars-

Having owned a 965 ('92 964T) and currently own an '03 996TT I agree with the comments about them being very different.

It got to the point with the 964T that I was worried about driving it due to the value. I can take the 996TT out and push it without having to worry about a massive air cooled rebuild. My 964T was twin plugged and fairly heavily modified, so it was very fast on the boost. The 996TT is way smoother with the power and really just a newer car in every way and easier to live with daily.

No way I would trade a nice clean 930 for a 996TT, from a value standpoint they aren't close. Finding a nice 996TT that hasn't been messed with might be getting difficult though, I don't know, I have had mine for a few years.

With that being said, I wouldn't pay for a 964T for what they are trading for now.
