996 C2 RSR street - track - rally

I have with my other 5 Porsches (having some of them since 1990) one car under project to be finished in 996 RSRish C2 form for my everyday use and some track and ice track days... It has already installed factory carbon fiber original RSR 2002 Mk1 bodywork and some other engine and suspension modifications, rollcage etc... It's been originally partly build in Sweden and I bought it as project, now getting it finally to almost ready... Here some starters...

love this look! i never thought the 996 would come around to be viewed as a classic but i think i was wrong.

Here's a link to a really cool rsr style 996 C4s:

That car in your link is one very cool car with ducktail, 996 Turbo wide rears and with Mk2 RSR front elements... I've noticed it also earlier. For this car I have done some modifications since purchase: suspension setup slightly softer (KW3) from Cup springs to more GT3 RS springs because of winter driving also. I also changed seats to My carbon / leather Cobra Misano S seats for comfort...

Last summer I did some testing in our local track with Proxes R888 semi slicks.

Suspension was then with 996 Cup springs and therefore quite cool to drive as a street car.

Engine is appr 60k km driven Porsche Ag aftermarket engine with some upgrades:

Some help for typical 3.4L engine oil starvation in long G force corners (which probably causes major amount of problems with 3.4L M96 engines,

-cup exhaust headers, race catalysators

-cup X51 oil pan with baffle oil walls

-X51 double oil pump in passenger side with extra oil exit line out from passenger side valve cover

Without these modifications, as if oil pump starves of oil > piston rod bearing failures, > some affect to IMS and RMS failures etc... These alterations should be done to every M96 non Metzger engine... So this doesn't have problems in race track, at least hasn't yet.

You can read more of that from here:
TTP Automotive GmbH Turbo Technik Pietz

It also has enlarged throttle body with double filter intake and something else too:

I am also fabricating now inner mud archs to fit to RSR factory carbon body. I didn't find anything proper to buy and I like to drive this car hard also in gravel snow and ice... I did some testing in closed gravel rally test stages: car was great drive, but the amount of mud in door sills and in front corners around lights etc was annoying...

I am also going to take mufflers completely off and put just straight exits... even if using this cart as round a year every day drive... Now it sounds so lame to my other 911s and 928s .

Thx!

CAE Cup shifter just arrived, so looking for time to installation. I think it fits great with my Cobra Misanos with their metallic parts and quick release suede steering wheel...

For fabricating inner wheel arches - mud fenders - for me to RSR body I decided to do one off set for me: first I prepared the casting surface with aluminium tape to form I wanted (after moving front cooling systems 60mm forward, reforming the washer tank for lowered large diameter wheels etc.) and then I did epoxy and fiber work "in site" carefully with paintbrush to multilayer level. Apparently it succeeded even to all the way up in the rear without dropping to floor, so rough base forms for mud fenders is done. Now I only must remove them, cut edges, add stone chip protection and do final assembly. Then this car can be driven in anger in gravel, ice and other dirty conditions without destroying car...

I wonder if this addition would make any difference to change OEM T-plenum to IPD Y-plenum, especially as if I have already double free flow intake, Cup exhaust headers and lines updated, and I am getting rid of mufflers... I am going to remap ECU anyway, so why not to change one of these in same process? And should I update the pedal to wire system and then rather accept 82mm GT3 throttle body with larger IPD plenum? I don't know...

Some story in here...

Improve performance

First CAE Cup shifter fitting, I removed some other short shifter (which was quite ok to shift anyway) and did first trial with crossed standard cables... didn't work, so I ordered CAE Carrera/Cup cables from factory. Some 3-5 days waiting with shipping, so then I can continue with this... Anyway it is in correct position to steering wheel (at least my deep quick release steering wheel with adapters), so I expect it to work as I have used same shifter in 996 Mk2 Cup car...

Removed shifter

First fitting of CAE

Instead of IPD tuning, I decided to get complete 996 GT3 Mk1 intake plenum and throttle body to change 3.4L oem plastic intake plenum out... I also decided, that when finishing this car for now to drive and get first my other Porsche engine projects ready and race, so then later (fall?) I start to work more with this engine: as if opening it also for inspection and bearing change, I can also get some stroke crankshaft for 3.8, 3.9 or 4.0L capacity. As having all these mods finished I'll expect to have some 350hp or more... 9ff was promising 415hp in those days they did exist, but I would be happy with some 996 GT3 Mk 1 360hp ish result... This is to be seen then .

This is similar to oem to get rid of

This is similar to oem 996 GT3 Mk1 intake I am going to install with GT3 mk1 throttle body.

While putting together my green RUF BTR and my grey 964 RSRish https://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/413807-strosek-911-ruf-finally-back-kicking-10.html for summer racing series, and finishing this to every day car purpose for now, I have had an idea to make a tribute colors of Martini "Leo Kinnunen Memorial, RIP 2017" (driver in Wyer team with Pedro Rodriquez in Gulf 917 team for WC victory and these colors for Targa Florio lap record Leo is still holding since) as he was one of original "Flying Finns" with WC raly drivers back then.. . Here is my two last color options, second picure showing also my idea to adjust one of my Ducatis to be build street fighter look with Paolo Tesio fairigs and Martini colors also...

My color favourite so far...

...this one has too much red for me, although would be more historically correct

I am happy to have this 996 finally working with more attitude. CAE Cup wires did arrive, so I can install next week this shifter. The one I removed is actually B & M short shifter, very similar (only different color I think) to Porsche Ag OEM short shifter, which is also manufactured by B & M.

I like the outcome of this 996 C2 as its driving feeling is getting close to this 997 GT3 Cup I have been driving occasionally (it also fits perfectly to my color scheme in my garage) while not racing with my own oldtimer Porsches... The seqvential trans is unbelievably great though .

A little bit an off topic to 996/7 issue, but still from my garage: I am also going to change color scheme of my oldtimer grey 911 3.6 RSR to this Martini scheme of other pelican fellow in his RWB. Then my 70ies 911 would pair my 90ies 996 as sketched above.

Alternative color scheme to do to me also, it is so cool! AskewRSR What I have been building for 6 months RWB Martini Turbo

996 C2 RSR and 964 RSR I thought of having in Martini grey themes, but then I also started to consider backdate my green to some modified Martini theme as well. Not yet there, but in process...

CAE shifter finally installed to my 996 C2 RSR with CAE Cup / Carrera cables. Here is something of the process:

Cables were fairly easy to change, adjustment adn setup took some time.

I located Cup shifter 30mm more rear than original mounting points would have been: it suits better next to my steering wheel setup.

Some modding of centre console plastic...

Fitting parts...

Final fitting before final assembly.

This car starts to be about ready for summer drives with preparations for becoming winter drives... .
