Takes multiple turns to start car 997

I have a 2006 997 Carrera S, Tiptronic, with no Keyless entry.

Recently, there are two issues that must be related.

1. While the car is running, I can turn the key to the left to shut off the car, but the car does not shut off and the key will pull out in my hand with the car running.

2. While the car is off, I insert the key into the ignition, turn key to the right to start car and nothing happens. The car will recognize the key because it says Key 1 in the dash display. It takes multiple tries, then the front hood pops loose, and then the final time the engine will start (after 4-5 tries).

There are reported issues on Rennlist but no definitive solution. Some says battery, some says ignition switch.

What can it be?
