IMS question

just bought a 1998 Boxster and had read about the IMS problem. Is there an easy way to check to see if it was ever addressed on my car?

Not really unless it was an LN retrofit and was registered, or the car came with paperwork showing it had been done.

And if you ask a dealer they will look at you funny like it doesn't even exist.

My 2cents due to age of car: drive it lots, Change the oil/filter every 5k, always keep oil at full mark, always drive above 2500rpm-never below except when idling, never park on an incline. Deal with IMS if or when clutch/trani needs major attention.
