Newbie 996 questions

I am a new 40th anniversary 996 owner, and just had a couple of questions. When starting up these cars, do the starters normally seem to turn over slower than any other cars out there? Mine seems "weak" in a way, but this may be normal. The battery gauge is fine - it's above 12V.

The second question comes to stalling - if you stall one of these cars, is it normal to hear a "clank" type of noise when you restart it?

Thanks,

Steve

My 2007 starts way slower and longer than my old 87. And, having not stalled a car in 25 years, I have stalled the new to me 997 twice in the past few weeks....must be used to the old 911 - owned it almost 10 years.

I don't know about a "clank" sound, but if the motor doesn't crank long enough to start on the first try, there is some funny "clank" like sound - like a whole bunch of electronics being upset and making adjustments. I've learned to crank it a little longer than the old air-cooled cars.

The "clank" may be your dual mass flywheel. The pressure plate bolted to the flywheel has a separate piece that contacts the clutch disk. That piece can turn up to 5 or 15?? degrees. The "clank" is pretty common. When you replace the clutch there is a simple procedure to check the flywheel.

There is a debate about changing to a Light Weight Flywheel (LWFW) and spring centered clutch similar to the older air-cooled cars. Join Renntech.org and or Rennlist and search there. Lots of info for 996 and later.
