I'm looking at purchasing a 99 911. It has 88k. Is there a issue with the water-cooled engines for that model?

There are a number of alleged issues. The unsettled controversy is whether they occur at a higher rate in 996s than in other cars or Porsches. Unfortunately, you won't find a definitive answer on any message board, just a lot of anecdotes and opinionating. You'll have to make up your own mind. The only agreement seems to be that later (2002+) engines are better, and that an inspection and service records are essential. Some say buy an extended warranty.
