Cool 4 things to figure out on my 1999 996 w/out a manual

Bought her recently and I plan to get some ramps, get dirty, and fix her up the best I can without having to take her to someone else - not because I dont trust someone else, but because I want to do this myself (well, as much as possible).

Here's 4 issues I havent solved yet (besides horn on start, that I posted mistakenly in the 911 forum), all shown in this video

1. How to set manual settings
2. How to play CDs from 4 slots
3. Best way to reattach silver plate on drivers side door
4. How to get the spoiler to go up automatically, over 70 mph.

Here's the video: YouTube - Things to figure out on new 996

On #4, I found a site that said there is a relay box in the trunk behind the carpet on the driver side where some of the relays could be switched, but I couldn't find the box behind the carpet on the drivers side.

Also going to buy this book recommended on Rennlist forum "Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche", and thinking about paying $20 at another site to download a repair manual too.

1. It's a little complicated. You can set a seat/mirror position to a certain key, or a certain button (1 or 2). Turn on the ignition and set the seats and mirrors where you want them. If you want the seats to self-adjust when you use a certain key, press the M button and then press the button with the key symbol on it. The seat position will then be stored with whatever key you have in the ignition. If you want the seats to self-adjust when you press the 1 or 2 key, then press the M button and then press the 1 or 2 key. To recall a seat position, either press the 1 or 2 key, or the car will just read whatever key you have in the ignition and the seats will self-adjust based on that.

2. Those are just holding slots, not players.

3. The plate was probably an aftermarket part, so you just have to get some fresh double-sticky tape and reattach it. Clean underneath it first.

4. The spoiler should work automatically. If it doesn't, you have to look for a problem. Is the spoiler light on while you're driving?

Besides the Essential Companion, you should look on eBay for an owner's manual. Porsche owner's manuals are essential to have because they contain a lot of DIY and emergency information, like what to do if your convertible top won't go back up.

Thumbs up

That is SO helpful - thanks Rrrockhound!

I realized today that I cant actually see the spoiler when it's up (putting it up manually). I thought it wasnt working, but in actuality I may just be too short. So I'll have to get out on the highway with someone behind me and see if it is going up automatically. Would be great if it's one less thing to fix.

Thanks again for your help!

Saw your other post on the classic 911 forum. The other thing I should mention is your car has only one rear fog light, on the left side. The right rear fog light doesn't even have a bulb in it, so don't bother trying to fix it. It's a German car quirk.

Sfgirl,
If you join Renntech.org they have manuals posted that you can study and/or download. The site is much more active with newer watercooled 911s like yours. There are some very good tech folks that post there also. Rennlist.com is another very active 996 site.
