California Speedway Fontana

California Speedway is being demolished to build a NASCAR short track
No more SCCA or PCA Autocross in Lot 6#
Go Kart track is history
RC racetrack will be no more
The ROVAL is gone too

I'll sure miss the braking action from the high speed banking to turn 3# into the infield

Very sad news. I think most of the acreage is going to be sold off to developers.

I guess I raced the last big track vintage event in February. Too bad, not a challenging track but fun and more importantly close.

It is a huge loss, all those tracks.
The new RC track was a hoot to watch too.

Couple of track day weekends left with Speed Ventures.

I'm getting my fix 11/7.

Post up some Roval videos.

At least its not being turned into housing and golf courses. With a replacement (albeit smaller) Nascar oval, there should still be plenty of parking lots for AX use, no? Reconfiguring as a smaller oval like bristol (seats 160,000) or martinsville (seats 60,000) still means that there would need to be lots of parking for folks. Nascar fans aren't stereotypically "ride share" or public transit users. Large RVs and trucks are the norm.

Here is a vid from a few years ago at PCA California Festival of Speed. In my lil 2.9L pea shooter running with the fully prepared race cars:

It was always Cal Speedways destiny. I think Penske spent $400MM building the place and reasonably expected a 10% return. Two NASCAR races and one IRL race wouldn't cover the interest carry. Now weekend club events make up their calendar. Remember OMS? These things don't work until the investment dollars get down to nickels.

So they will build a NASCAR short track, because why? Because the Irwindale paved 1/2 mile was so successful.
