Windshield protection......

Ok all you track junkies. I have stumbled onto a local business that specializes in optically clear (patented) tear-off's for windshields. NASCAR, Busch, ARCA, Winston West, Goodies series all use this. During pit stops, one of four plies (layers) is peeled off and the driver has a clear view of things.

I was thinking of this product more for chip protection at track events. I am working with these guys on a prototype, and developing a shape that will fit all 911 cars (shouldn't be hard, since I dont think they ever changed shape).

I am curious if anyone would be interested. I am still waiting for pricing etc.

Let me know what you guys think?

Chris

I will find out in the next few days what this would cost. I myself think this is a good thing.

The cost would be a key factor. Windshields are about $160 out here, which isn't that bad to replace every couple of years.

Jack, I wish my windshield only cost that. The nice thing is that 911 windshield shape remained (basically) the same throughout the air-cooled years.

I loved your write-up from WSIR this past weekend. Did you ever get your passenger door fixed from CFOS?

Yes, the door's back to normal. I haven't fit the squeegee piece into the chrome yet, but who's going to call me on that?

I know the German OEM windshields cost more, but I've always heard that they were inferior to the aftermarket (German glass is softer?) pieces.

Keep us posted on the protectors, though.

Jack,

Don't your windsheilds just pop out for easy replacement anyway? I seem to remember this video...

...seriously though, I've also heard that the German glass is softer, and since replacing mine in the turbo with the aftermarket glass, much less pitting...

I think I might be on my fifth windshield.

(Drive as I say, not as I do.)

I've heard the same thing about the softness issue. I don't mind the cost, (well actually, I'd rather keep the money!), but the in and out is what worries me. Too much oppurtunity for an unseen scratch or an undetected slow leak. Rust in the wrong place!

Chris,
Set up your first shop at VIR - notorious for windscreen breakage. The track surface and facilities are close to perfect, but for some unfathomable reason they have gravel in the paddock. Hot tires pick up gravel, it locks into the compound as it cools. When the tires get hot again, the gravel flies everywhere. WE always loose a few screens every weekend. If this product is priced reasonably, it could be a winner!
