Hot Lap Timer
 

What side of the car do you mount the electronic 'eye' part of the Hot Lap timer? I've seen it on the passenger side on most cars. I don't have the tri pod that you would normally set up on the start/finish line. There is usually someone that has one set up but I would like to know the most common side to mount and what height should I set it at.

It will always be different at different tracks. Usually, for me, it's on the driver's side. You can usually figure it out if you know the layout of the facility. Most tracks won't let anyone walk across the track to set the sender up, so they're usually near start/finish on the side of the track accessible from the paddock.

Bring lots of zip-ties and a little soft foam insulation to make mounting the receiver (and re-positioning it) simple.

It depends on the group. Open Track Racing is one that's very good (and cheap) that's a good choice if you can get a weekday off. Other than that, Speedventures, NASA, Alfa ROmeo Club, Tracquest, and the POC are all good, although prices and track time will vary.

I don't think I'll be there, but Open Track Racing has a day coming up on October 8th. It's only $125 for the day, and you'll get 2 1/2 hours of track time. They also have instructors available to help familiarize yourself with the track.

I may be doing a big Willow weekend November 8th and 9th with Touring Car Racing Association, which is also a pretty good group.

Were you there? It was my first time in the C2. That was a blast even though my car wasn't set up right. The Yoko's I have on isn't the best for the track. I tried adjusting the tire pressure but that didn't help. I haven't installed my RS swaybars and stiffer coil overs either. I'll be working on that in the next few days before the next outing.

Hey, were you hanging with Zimmerman and Jim Planet? I noticed a few R Gruppe guys over there. Come to think of it, you had the trailor and the F-250 towing it, right? Wait, were you the guy collecting all the awards for everyone? Next time I'll make sure to stop by and say hi. I could have used some help setting up my car for that autocross.

Ya, I was working corners during your run group. Your car looked great, and you were doing OK compared to the bozos who were getting lost on course and wandering into oncoming traffic! They needed more instructors for the students, I think, and a mandatory course walk. Results are up at this link and I see they have you driving a "944 Turbo"? Ooops. The computer problems extended beyond registration delays, I guess. The more events I attend in other regions, the more I realize what a good performance driving program we have in San Diego region.

Yes, I had my trailer and F250 towing it and was hanging with the R-Gruppe guys in the pits, but the fellow picking up the awards was Mike G. (posts here as "Ted" sometimes) who also has an F250 pulling a white trailer. My truck is silver and my trailer is a lower profile V-nose aluminum job, parked to the south a bit from the R-Gruppe corral.

Mike won TTOD in his white '73 911 and waxed me in AM class because I didn't put on my slicks and he did. I had 4th TTOD in my silver '73 (#908), missing 3rd by .022 (yes, that is 22 one-thousandths of a second- I musta blinked at the wrong time!) and missing second by 2 tenths. I hate it when that happens. You end up kicking yourself for that tiny little mistake that cost you a half second. I know I blew that much getting loose coming off the banking into the chicane towards the end. I wish we could have had more practice on that track, it was very interesting but a little too tight in the beginning through the infield for my car, especially without the slicks.

ps- BTW, the hotlap transmitter was on the passenger side at this track, and if you come to a SDR autox, it will always be on that side at Qualcomm Stadium.

I told them about the description and all they said is as long as the class was correct, don't worry about it. I think the 944 turbo does fall in the KS/S class. However, I think I put myself in the wrong class 'cause the KS/S is for a stock 964. I have a few mods done, not much, that may have bumped me into another. I'll have to look into the rules again and make sure I'm in the right one.

Yeah, my time sucked the big one. I was more interested in learning the car rather than worrying about getting a fast time. This was the first time I took this one to the track and the difference compared to the '81 I had was night and day. I think I'll do a couple more autox's before I take it on WSIR or any other big tracks. After I put on my sways and my other set of coil-overs, I think it'll handle better. Let alone getting some track shoes for the car.

So as Jack mentioned above, I should take tons of zip ties and prepare to change the transponder from left to right depending on where the tri-pod is set. Or, I can just buy my own and have it set where ever I want it.

Zip ties are the answer. You don't really want to leave it in the car when you're not using it. Somebody'll swipe it.

You can have 4 points of mods and stay in Street Stock (SS) in Zone 8, as long as you have street tires (non-R compound). 4 points would be uprated sways and torsions (or spring rates, in your case).

Just make sure you coordinate with the sanctioning body and the other racers who may be placing them. You can only have one transmitter (per side) on the track or people will get multiple signals per lap, yielding "sector" times rather than lap times (I've seen it happen).

Ive left my pit stall "open" for years... and have NEVER lost a zip tie....
