JP's comments about the pro driver are spot on. Several years ago one of the San Diego reigon's very fast Boxter-S drivers was mixing it up with the SCCA crowd and doing quite well until the Pro-Solo tour hit town. The national champ took our boy's Boxter out and was over 2 seconds a lap quicker.......Whoa!

I hear you Jack...
The only problem with that is... ...WHAT NOW?! 1:28.00 ?! It never ends. ;) |
I'm in the same boat as JP; doing autocross there is not an easy
way to know what to work on, or to measure if it worked. Nobody else has the same car as me, every course favors one type of vehicle over others, sometimes a guy changes tires, etc etc etc. Pros should rent themselves out to us for a couple runs in our cars. A couple years ago I went to a session talking about the various data log systems. Anyway, they had taken a 996 to a race and they were lucky enough to have Randy Pobst drive it in a practice session for a few laps. You could see in the data that he took one kinda easy lap, then everything was fast and consistent every time. It would be great to be able to compare real data against experts every session. |
I'll try to rent Mr. Skinner again this season (he's cheep:D ).
Last time I made this mista...er...did this he was fastest looser for TTOD, 2 days in a row while I was...ah.. somewhat futher back. He said he liked the set-up, which validated that part (and eliminated my favorite excuse). THE FIRST TIME HE SAT IN THE CAR he went bout a half second quicker than I. I never shoulda showed him the 901 shift pattern :D I'll rig up my new digital video camera to see how the hell he does it. I know a guy that can overlay 2 videos to compare his & my runs. Cheating? You bet your a$$:D |
We had Tom Berry and another pro soloists come up to alaska. They were running 1-2 seconds than we were in our cars. Tom Berry won the big SCCA Solo II national this year.
And I thought we were good drivers. LOL |
