rollbar guide loop
 
Hey guys-

My Autopower-esque rollbar does not have guide loops on its crossbar and I want to mount my harnesses on it. A friend told me that there are guide collars that I can bolt onto the bar to keep the belts aligned but I can't find them anywhere on the net. Does anyone know a searchable name for these things and if they actually exist?

Just make sure they are where they need to be when you get in the car, once you strap in tight they won't go anywhere.

well, its not quite that simple for me (i don't think)

the crossbar on my rollbar is "kinked" to allow for more room behind the drivers seat. Im worried the belts are going to drift off to the sides under a heavy load.

Tom- do you have kinks in your bar?

Yep. From my shoulders, through the guide holes in the seat, to the bar is about 12 inches, plus or minus. The shoulder straps would need to go outward another 5 inches or so to get to the bends in the bar, and while I won't say it is impossible, short of really screwing up putting on the belts I can't think how.

What kind of seat do you have, and where are your harnesses attached?

I guess you're right Tom. Im running an SRD. I think that because the belts are wide enough (3 inches) and the buckle will be tight against the bar that the belt probably wont shift outwards.

Im going to put in my bar and mount the harnesses tonight, I'll get back to you if I see something Im concerned about.

If you decide that you need something, go to http://www.mcmastercarr.com and search for shaft collar. I use these to keep the swaybar from moving sideways.

Mat, I had the same setup with my bar. I took a piece of flat aluminum stock, cut to length, raised the middle sectiion ( in bench vise) and secured ends with hose clamps. Works great and dosn't look half bad, Definitely unsafe to have the harness slide around. Good luck.

This became an issue when on the Hans device they require the shoulder straps to remain located rather close together. I got some cool aluminun collars at Mirage in San Diego.

Tom,

Nice. Interested in what type Kirkey seat you have ?

Is it their road race model ?
Did you add the head pieces?
How do you like it.

I am looking around for a seat and I am over 220lbs. So need a larger seat. It is tough to find one to try out. I do fit very well in a sparco evo2 though.

In the owners manual is says, the inner parts of the shoulder harness should be 3 inches apart. The cross bar should be 1 to 2 inches below the the highest point on the Hans device.

Here's a copy and paste from another thread on belts, I have never seen shoulder belts mounted in an X? Is this common?

A lot of guys mentioned that in some stretch the shoulder belts are falling off the shoulders, a VERY dangerous thing obviously (someone just got killed here in WSIR last year when the shoulder belts slipped off his shoulders in an impact ).
All you guys NEED TO GO AHEAD, release one of the shoulder belts off the harness bar and mount it again when it is X'd behind the seat.
The shoulder belts will not slip off your shoulders that way.
This is the correct way to run harnesses when you don't have a racing seat, with a racing seat, you run them straight

It is not the roadrace seat, I believe it is the Intermediate 20º Layback Seat, seen here:

It came with the car, with the helmet supports already installed. In fact, I believe they are installed incorrectly, based on the photos on Kirkey's web site, the holes should be a little lower, and the supports should go up before they bend forward, rather than down as on mine. That being said, If they were any higher, I couldn't see over them, and they are high enough that my shoulders don't hit. Here is another view:

This particular seat is not specificly designed for road racing, but it is extremely supportive, and much more comfortable than it looks. It is also available in various widths, from 14 to 20 inches. I believe mine is 18" and it fits my fat 250lb butt just fine: snug but not uncomfortable.

I have never heard of crossing the belts, but that doesn't mean much, I haven't been doing this very long.
