Replacing syncro rings- What else to do?

Soon I'm going to be replacing the syncro rings on my 84 Carrera, and I have a case of while I'm in there syndrome. I was wondering about some other upgrades I could do while I'm in there. I was thinking the wevo internal gated shifter and the coupler. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks,

Tommy

Operating Sleeves.

What's your budget?

The most I can possibly spend is about 2k.

If you can afford it, do the WEVO internal gate. IT is sweet.

Basically you can treat 1+2nd gears as a unit and 3+4th as another unit.
If you need to replace one thing in the unit I recommend replacing everything else in that group. Example: If 2nd gear syncro is worn out, replace 1st and 2nd gear operating sleeve, both dog teeth and both syncros. On the operating sleeves that you don't replace, remove the burrs.

2K? And you are doing the work yourself? I take it you track the car as this is posted here. Will the budget cover a cooler and/or a spray bar?

Zeke,
Unfortunately I am not doing the work myself, as I have a fear of transmissions and screwing things up. I do track the car, and have not looked into a cooler or a spray bar. BTW, whats's a spray bar?

915 transmissions are nothing to fear. I'm an idiot and I hardly ever have any parts left over when I put one together. ;)

$2k budget?

Buy a plane ticket to San Jose for $400, and spend $400 on the Jerry Woods transmission class. You'll have plenty of cash left over for trans parts and you won't be afraid to open them up. Then fix it yourself.

the bently book has a good section on 915s

I'd also replace the brake bands and energizer since you'll already have it apart. Take a good look at the dog teeth and if worn, replace those and the selector sleeve. If you don't be sure to measure the selector-ring to shift-fork tolerances.

slight hijack- can someone post pics of good vs worn parts?

Maybe I'm not calling it by the right name. But I'm talking about an overhead lubing device that flows oil onto the gear stack. Normally, the only oil the gears see is that which is picked up from the bottom by rotation. Some of the samller diameter parts aren't directly lubricated by that method alone. They only get what is splashed on them and what flows over from the larger neighboring parts.

All of the parts in a trans are critical to good operation and all need plenty of oil which can be in short supply when things are rotating very fast and the oil is at one end or the other due to forces applied while racing. Picking up the oil with a pump and flowing it onto the gears is the best way to correct the deficiencys caused by racing or high performance driving.

In the normal every day world of street driving, the tranny will last nearly forever with timely oil changes and decent care while shifting.
