any experince with the XT Ultra-Lap timer
Last fall there was some discussion on this board of the XT Ultra-Lap lap timer as a potentially better alternative to the venerable Hot Lap timer. Has anyone used the Ultra-Lap for a few events and have any experiences (positive or negative) to share? Given the features, I'm leaning toward the Ultra Lap but wanted to get some input before ordering.

I've got one, it's great, WAY better than Hotlap in every way.
|
Cory - do you have a sense that they are getting more popular such that there might be transmitters at many events as it got to be the with Hot Lap model? I guess I ought to just get the transmitter as well.
|
I just bought the transmitter, there's no guarantee that someone else will bring one. They are getting more popular but there are a lot of old Hotlaps out there. My only gripe with the system is that the cord could be a little longer.
|
They use the same transmitter as the AIM system (not the Hotlap), and I've been surprised that I've hardly ever needed my transmitter. Still, the package is cheap enough that it makes sense to get the transmitter as well.
I agree that it's superior to the Hotlap in every way. http://www.plavanracing.com/ultralapindex.htm |
My old Hotlap in-car display finally failed. So I switched to the AIM system. I haven't been out with it yet so I can't comment on performance (I hope it's good!). I prefer the looks of the AIM for sure (as if that matters).
I just saw that AMB has a in-car display for the X260 transponder. If you don't need splits it might be a good way to go. It's SPENDY. Here's a link. Have fun, Kevin |
I picked up an ultralap early this year and have used it a couple times with great success. I will agree that the cord is a little too short, but a quick call to ultralap and $15 later a longer version was waiting in my mailbox. Now it can easily be routed from the rollbar across the longitudinal and to the center of the dash...
And thanks to Chad Plavan that I bought it from! |
Have had one for about 8 months, no problems, works great, almost exact times to the AMB. Buy it from Chad Plavan on the board

Thanks everyone - I placed the order with Chad late yesterday.
Brian - thanks for the heads-up on the longer cable. I was trying to envision how I was going to be able to neatly route a 6' cable and get from the receiver to the display unit. |
Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm glad you guys are enjoying the Ultra lap timers. If you guys ever have a problem, come to me first and I will make it right.
Since I have a roll cage in my race car, I run the cable along the X beam... What length do you think would be the best for cars without roll cages? I talked with the manufacturer and they said they can make me some "Special" units with a custom cord (instead of ordering it directly from them)..... I may take them up on it. What other length should I carry? Currently I carry the 20inch(motorcycles) and 6 foot (cars). FYI- I can get the displays programed now so that it will display the split lap time during the session and not just when you download to the computer. I could care less, since I like keeping my eyes on the track :) |
Hey Chad, I think the ten foot version is what I got. It was exactly the right length to come down the side of the rollbar, tuck under the door sill trim, and across the dash to roughly where the ashtray is/was...

Am wanting to get a timer and the Ultra looks like it wins. Would like to see a longer cable come with. The 10' version seems like it would reach almost anywhere. Would be a removable install in my car so may be able to use the 6' version. Cable is generally cheap in bulk. If they supplied a longer cable you could always wrap it up someplace. [EDIT] Is the $259 price still good. They have them on e-bay for that price plus $6.00 shipping but would rather get from Plavan.

Do any of you have experience or opinion on the Mychron lap timers?
