Fuel cell vent hose
Hi all. Were is the best place to run the vent to? I have it going
to the left side fender well but I dont think red hot brake rotors and gas fumes work well together were is a better spot to vent in the front of the car? I was thinking about in front of the windshield. Thanks Palmer |

Most guys I know have it in the rear of the fender. Never heard of any issue with that. The amount of fumes coming out of that fent are not going to be dense enough when the car is moving fast enough to heat the rotors to ignite.

I vented my forward to the floor pan at the front of the trunk, pretty much dead center. I figured that would be the best place to avoid any overflow getting on any tires, brakes, etc. I've seen others like this. Not that it makes it correct...
Note: I have a internal check valve in the tank/vent if the car turns over. It is essentialy a steel ball that closes the passage in case of a flip. I didn't install the type of overflow valve that uses a light plastic ball that closes the passage when I overfill the tank and fuel goes up the vent (ball floats to close the passage). Fuel Safe 15 gal (stock square style, steel). For a '71 911
I installed an aftermarket fuel pump at the tank as well but I don't know that that is necessary. I just worried about my stock pump going out due to age. I used stainless braided lines which in retrospect was probably overkill. I found the job fairly, well, not easy, but straightforward. Search the race/auto-x board for all kinds of discussions. You have some consideration based on car, engine, etc. In case you didn't know, be sure you get a proper approved cell if you plan on racing. All road race organizations require FIA cert. I believe. |

eric thanks talked to atl and fuel safe today. my buddies a distributor and told me one bought out the other. was looking at the 27 gallon fuel safe vs 26 gallon atl . both FIA and PCA/SCCA approved. both fit in existing fuel area just as stock OEM gas tank does. already passed AZRA tech 2 weeks ago..........next hurdle is PCA tech next week . had my SCORE off road car burn up, had my aunt die in electrical fire, had 2 men burn to death in front of me(10 ft) when i was first on scene here at airport i work at. me and fire do not GET ALONG! so aside from being phobic and wearing nomex undies socks baclava and 3 layer schumacher suit...........i would like to hedge my bet and possibly save my A$$ with a fuel cell! rather error on side of safety, cuz i cant put any money in show room stock engine! and as we both know..........racing is an inherently fun addictive dangerous sport! keep me posted on your efforts and send some pics of your car would love to see it!

Yikes!! Charles, I don't blame you your fear. I think we underestimate fuel and fire sometimes.
I'll see if I can get some pics of my cell installation tomorrow. For now:

Thanks. The pic doesn't show off all the stone chips and rubber marks...good USE marks.
That is entering the keyhole at Mid Ohio. Great track. I realize it is a trek for you but it is a great and challenging place to drive if you even have the chance... The farthest your way I've ever been is Hallett. I'm jealous you can drive all year long! |

my goal is to get cell into stock location, use stock fill on fender, cover up with front hood carpet and forget about it! least amount of aircraft fuel line and fittings possible, unless needed.

willow is seven hours away west and PIR and FIREBIRD(bondurant school) run everyday of the week with only exception when nascar or indy or drags coming into town. same weekend as nascar(look at turn 4-bad voodoo sh%^!!!!) is another PCA event at firebird. i have been to 4 events in 6 weeks and ran one........the AZRA event. my buddy has been w/them for about 7 yrs and he suggested it as our 1st goal as far as tech. they loved it and stated you should see some of the crap we get. also stated did it just come off of showroom? so just that meant we were on right track. next zimmerman rotors, pbr pads, frt. brake ducts, new suspension bushings, already 4 wheel aligned and lowered nose, has turbo 930 tie rods, running dunlops for now and will burn those up before buying mega buck hi speed drifting meats. since it gets damn hot under 4 layers in just 85 degrees and w/summer setting in, we have set next goal in fall to run again. its a toy that i take out when no clouds in sky w/girlfriend up to flag sedona or payson thru the twisties. its going into patrick motorsports next week for another mass infusion of cash of the above and some other goodies. good people there that give a damn about their work and my happiness!

Your plan sounds perfect! Can you get some sort of large check valve in the filler pipe? In the event of a turn over, it probably will want to come out the stock filler (but now that I think of it, there may be somewhat of a internal flap that will help slow this.)
Cool pic. Flying around PIR with the top down must be great! |

from my understanding from owning one on my class 8 chevy score truck they already come with one from factory right where neck meets can. one i have is 44 gallons. but will check that THOURGHLY! yes running w/top down is wayyyyy COOL. best vision also. i guess some PCA chapters frown on this. but rules state ................either up w/windows down or down w/windows down and cover installed. no noise no rattles no nothing but clean air cool air! spoke with prez of zone 8 and he said it was okay, but after searching pics for cabs w/tops down across US all i found were cabs running w/tops up. 2 days ago joined PCA and when at PATRICK MOTORSPORTS he will sign me off as far as being PCA TECHED. just got to get arm restraints and take fuchs caps off. its been a wicked 3 months in garage prepping w/my 20 yr old son who is head over heels to go drive it ! so its been a incredible father/son experience. had to show him something different than off road racing where no women really ever hang out due to dirty dusty conditions. we all comment on how many women are at the nice clean sterile track! hahahahahaha and last track day there were some lookers! the owner of the ferrari that spun my second lap in front of us going into turn one at warp speed, had one of these "hi-maintenance models" that we couldnt keep our eyes off of. comment was made "we have never seen that in BAJA!" LOL so yes doing this again is alot of fun. ran SCCA in '77 with datsoon 280-z then in '87 took 2nd overall in state racing SCORE 1/2 1600 car til it burnt up on us at last race! so its real fun to be back on asphalt!
