Racing Fram remote oil filter housing: 4 ports??

I'm re-plumbing my race car in it's entirety: -20 to the motor, -16 return, -16 to/from the oil filter housing (this topic), -16 through my (-16) Mocal t-stat, -16 through the oil cooler and back to the dry sump Peterson tank.

Here's a link to the remote filter mount: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/frm-hpk600

My car *was* plumbed via -12 from the engine & through the oil filter housing, but I cannot find out *why* there are 4 ports on this housing...2 in and 2 out? One port was plugged, but again since some of the oil lines were missing, I have no clue.

Ideas guys?

Mark

Ok, it appears there are in's and out's on each side, hence the 4 ports. My guess is that they offered a very low restriction oil pass to the front cooler as follows:

one line in from the engine (was -12, will now be -16),
two lines out from the filter: one to the oil tank and the other to the oil cooler. Of course with a short path and 0 resistance to the tank, I feel very little oil would pass through the cooler. I'll block one port and plumb all the oil through the filter, all the oil the to -16 Mocal t-stat and let the t-stat regulate oil flow to the cooler.

I think you'd want ALL the oil going to your cool, not just some. (Sorry if I misread your post ...) Maybe a diagram of what you're planning to do (or even how it was set up before) would help?

Maybe the four ports are simply to allow for different configurations since this is obviously a universal part?

I figured it out. There are two inlets and two outlets so you can choose your configuration. If you bore out your through holes into the housing and weld on -16 fitting, you have a -16an oil filter housing.
