DB Meter

Can anybody recommend a good, fairly inexpensive, handheld Decibel meter for measuring the sound on a car (engine/muffler)?

I do not know you budget, but a quick google search (using db meter as my terms) finds these two vendors:

Davis

Action-Electronics

There are many more.

Radio Shack sells one for cheap.

Make sure you set it on DbA not DbC.

I had and assistant hold it at 40', 50' and 60' intervals roadside as I made redline passes.

I passed the 103 DbA limit. Loudest I could get at 40' was 99DbA.

Were you able to compare Radio Shack reading with any of the db readings at the tracks you run at? Were they close?

The only way to do that comparison would be to set my meter next to their's and then watch the result.

No, I haven't done that.

But I was able to meter my car with the quiet exhaust and stay below Laguna's VERY strict sound policy at 92 DbA. I pegged 87.

So for my purposes, it worked great!
