Lap timer (or maybe data acquisition)

I searched but didn't see any recent discussion.

What's the latest on lap timers and/or data acquisition?

I think I just "need" a basic lap timer. Anyone know what a good one is? I had a HotLap, but could never get it to work.

Or, have lap timers gone the way of buggy whips? Should I really start investing in a fancy gps data deal?

Really hoping to find an affordable (cheap) way to determine my lap times on practice days when no timing is being done.

Thanks,
Skip

Skip,

There is a fellow over at Rennlist who made one with a cellphone, etc which is for sale. Its pretty slick. Its on racing forum (lap timer for Road Atlanta or something similar).

Go for data... you can get so much more...

Lap times will tell you if your net result over the whole lap was faster or slower.

Data acq will tell you exactly where, and even if the whole lap ended up slower you can find speeds in individual corners...

Skip,

What did you end up using?

I used a Garmin 4Runner 305 last year, It's a wrist watch type GPS device that maps the track and does lap timing. Nothing fancy and you need to download to a laptop to do the maps but it was something I already had and worked well.

next year I think I'll buy a Trackmate for data and video, they seem to be just what a casual user needs, small easy to install and use
