Checking interest on my custom G50 race box?

I am considering selling my G50 Race prepared transmission and wanted get an idea from everyone here as to what you think I can sell it for and to see if there is any interest to purchase it.

It is a late 80's box (88 I think)
Shortened bell housing,
PMS LSD,
Steel synchros on all gears,
light weight gears,
8:32 R&P,
Billet shift forks,
993 side cover,

All internal components have been Cryo/Rem treated (shifts unbelievably smooth)
It has less than 50 hours on it and I will have G-Box go through it before selling just to make sure it is in the condition described and refresh where needed.
It would also come with a custom mount which uses the Wevo Semi Solid motor/trans mounts and will fit 86 and older chassis.

I also have a Hargett G50 shifter and linkage that would also be available with or separate from the trans and an optional 9:31 R&P that has also been Cryo/Rem treated.

With this transmission I had only a 7.3% parasitic loss in HP from flywheel HP to wheel HP. (I also use special CV's with treated internals but I don't know how much this contributed to the above number)

I have well over $13,000 in the box right now not including the Hargett shifter and the spare R&P.
So how much do you think the G50 is worth if refreshed etc and then how much do you think I can get for it?
Thanks I welcome all feedback

gear ratios?

jwerion 12-14-2009 03:29 PM

The gear ratios are 1st gear- 16:36, 2nd- 19:34, 3rd- 20:30, 4th- 26:34, 5th- 23:26 All components have been Cryo/Rem treated, have steel synchros, billet shift forks, etc.

I happened to see this box apart on the bench yesterday. The gears look brand new. For anyone who doubts whether or not REM treatment is a useful "upgrade" I can tell you that it works. This gearbox is primo.

FWIW I spent nearly this doing it myself.... (estimating below)

G50 core - $3400
Guard Gears - $2400
Guard 50/80 LSD - $3000
Machine work: $600
Clutch and x-member - $1500

Totaling $11,000 NOT INCL labor, steel syncros, and std. shift forks.

I had a similarly geared and setup box that I recently sold because we moved to a G96 type box.

Bill - we used 26.5 tall tires and went to 8000 rpm. So it makes the gearing look a little different :-) (note he also said 8:32 r+p).

I imagine this box was in something with similar tire size/rpm.

So here it is w/ 8:32, still tight. Of course taller tires and a higher rev limit spread things out again.

Bill, you are right it is fairly tight but it does have the 8:32 R&P in it now and I ran the michelin sx slicks at 27.874 inches tall and shifted at 8500 rpm.

That is the best gear chart I have seen, would you mind sending me a copy via e-mail so I can work on figuring out what gearing I will need in the future either on this box or a new GT3 6 speed I am looking at. I assume it is Excel based?

Also if you don't mind I would love having your input on the gearing to best match my new motor. Once you send me your e-mail I can send you the specs and Dyno numbers.

Justin,

Quaiffe makes a nice app that can give you similar results. You can download it from their website.

At this point I have decided to keep the G50 trans as the GT2 box I was considering will require just to much modification to my cage/tube framing to get it to fit. Also I am not to crazy about the 30 extra pounds.

Tease!

JWE - to really move ahead of the pack - have you looked into using the transaxel from a late 60's Eldorado? You will need to flip the ring and pinion gear, but I am guessing a cutting torch and some angle iron - it will fit like a glove.

Big bonus - you eliminate 2 of those expensive gears and the clutch pedal. Seems like a good fit for your race car.

Always looking out for you.
