Stock D/E wheel preferences

1) For the 911 SC, what wheels are people running in D/E class PCA?

I have my original 16x6 and 7, and recently was given a set of 15x7 and 8. I am not racing yet, but I am slowly preparing my car and skills in that direction.

2) Can the 15s run 225 / 245 or will that be too sloppy and better stick with the 205 / 225?

3) I guess I would end up needing 2 sets of wheels, for wet / dry, right? My other option would be to sell the 15s and 16x6s and buy some 16x9s for the rear so I could run 16x7 and 16x9, but that would only leave me with one set of wheels.

Most club racers have at least 3 sets of wheels: one set with new (or almost new) tires for qualifying and races, one set with older tires for practice and warm-up sessions, and one set for rain tires. Tire costs are a big part of racing, especially if you want to be competitive.

Stock 16" wheels are not popular but there are some quick people still using them. Most use 225 front and 245 rear tires on 7" and 8" or 7" and 9" wheels.

17" wheels are popular. With some minor mods (fender rolling in the front and flattening oil lines in the rear), you can fit 245 front and 275 rear tires on 8" and 9" wheels.

15" wheels have been gaining in popularity in PCA stock classes. They are light and provide better gearing (depending on the rear tire). You can use 225 front on a 7" or 8" wheel; and either a 225, 245, or 275 in the rear depending on the rear wheel (either 8" or 9").

Thanks. I was wondering if people were using the 15s since they do offer lower gearing for these low hp classes. With stock too, thats the only way to change your gearing. It would be interesting to see how someone on 17s compares to someone on 15s. I might try to watch a PCA race this summer, to see how everything works. It will be a year or three before I would be ready to give it a try.

Ditch your 16" 6s and 7s and start working with the 15" 7s and 8s.

The width of the rim has a lot of influence on the final width of the tire. Put 225s on all four wheels and have at it.

The 15" 245 will fit nicely on an 8" rim but it's a "tall" tire and will not give you the effective R&P/gearing advantage.

Good point about the "tall" tires. Sounds like decent advice. Seems like I need to burn the rubber off my 16s in DEs and then look at ditching them and picking up another set or two of wheels. I will see what my lap times look like before I retire the 16s and then compare when I tread up the 15s.
