Spec 911 Composite Rear Flare Question??
Hi,
I was hoping to get some clarity about how much steel is to remain when doing fiberglass flares? The following quote is from Spec 911 rules; Fiberglass or composite rear fender flares may include most of the rear fender as long as steel remains around the perimeter of the fender. THANKS! |

Hi James,
I'm the drivers rep for the Spec 911 and PRC rules commitee. The composite rear flares allow almost the full fender. You need to leave the steel in the door jamb, and along the bottom of the window, and down the edge of the deck lid. If you can get a look at the cars from Jerry Woods, you'll see some examples. There is about 2 inches of steel along the edges and the "flares" are mounted to this perimeter with bolts of some kind. The flares cover the steel and so look basically like full quarter panels. I'll see if I can find a picture to post. -Andy

This was my car while under construction.
There is a 2" width of around the perimeter of the whole fender/quarter/flare etc. My car was built prior to those rules, but my interpretation of the rules says my car meets them ![]() fit up of body parts ![]() ![]() ![]() close up of Dzus ![]() finished

Good rules are ones which are as brief as needed so that most readers will interpret them in the same way. The Spec 911 guys seem to have done just that with this rule.
I often try to figure out what the rule intended, as that helps interpretation. And it is fun to guess. Here I think they wanted to allow fiberglass/composite rear fenders for weight savings and wider rubber. But did not want people cutting up the inner fender panels or the tub. |

The rule is intended to make it easier to replace damaged body panels. The fiberglass replacement fender does not save a significant amount of weight and thus does not confer a performance advantage. They are much easier to replace than the stock steel fenders and thus make sense in a race car.

Thanks everyone. It is appreciated.
I will leave approximately 2 to 4 inches around the perimeter. |
