Oil in the catch can
My 2.7L 914/6 is plumbed with the hose from the top of the crankcase going to the oil tank and the vent hose from the tank
going to a catch can in the rear trunk. During normal street operation, it stays dry. After this last 2 AXs, it has gathered about 8 oz of oil each time. Durring the last AX, the car got 10 hard runs, with the rpms probably never dropping under 4500 or so and wound to 7k as often as possible ![]() That's why I put the catch can there, I suppose ........dumb question time. Is it "normal" for a 911 engine to pump that much oil out the breather? Even if it is "slosh" from the tank, it woud take a lot of air to move that much oil, me thinks. Any input here? The amount in the catch can isn't noticeably missing on the dip stick......so what do I do with it? Adding a like amount to the tank seems a bit silly.....but I'm open to ideas.

Yes, it is normal for oil to overflow into the catch can. I have a car which has the oil tank relocated to the front, and there is no dip stick for the race oil tank. So...how do you know you have enough oil in the car? oil is blown out into the catch can. if you never have oil in your catchcan there is room for more oil in your tank. On a track car you want all the oil possible in the tank so keep filling the tank until some blows into the catch can.
On a side note at high revs there is a steady flow of oil in the engine breather hose so it has to go to the tank not to a catch Jim |
