911 track car build

Hello my name is Shawn Washburn I live in Knightdale NC. I am the owner of ( washburnmotorsports ) www.washburnmotorsports.com I have been in the car biz from age 13. My father owns an auto body shop in VT. Washburn's Auto Body. I built my first Race car (84 VW Jetta) at age 18 and took 3 place the first time out. I ended up moving to Colorado and living out there for 10 years on my own, along the way a scored a job at a local Audi shop (Champagne Motorsports) doing service work and building Rally cars, Hill climb cars, for Pikes Peak. I had brought my race car and converted it to open comp class in the ( CHCA ) i was racing against 800+ HP car
and there was no way it was fair but i ended up beating some of the guys and getting 3rd place , rookie of the year with a 5th overall finish out of 12. LOTS OF FUN.
I ended up moving to the east again and wanted to build a real track car. I always wanted to build a porsche. A guy i worked for out here in NC told me forget it you could never afford a porsche. Well i have had 7 in the 3 years i have been here. I also started my own Business doing VW/ Porsche restoration. I finally got the porsche i wanted to use for a track car. And here it is. A 79 911 with steel 930 flares. I have stripped it out and started the cage work/ body. I just wanted to share with all of you out there what i am building and don't ever let some ass tell you can't afford it. If you put your mind to it you can do anything. I hope to get this done sooner than later but this is it so far.
I am doing everything by myself. I do have a shop but i chose to work on this one at my home. This is why it isn't done yet but it getting close. take a look.
any input would be helpful and thank you ahead of time.
Hope you all like what you see so far.

wow, looks great! i like the cage work. i hate it that everyone thinks porsches are so much more expensive to own/work on. any car is expensive if you pay others to do the work - it take a lot of skill and experience to do that kind of work. if you really look at the cost of parts for porsches the are not more expensive than any other car. i think my short formula for calculating the cost of a rebuild is the cost of the car to start on + 300-400 hours labor +15-20K parts = finished classic.

Thanks, i just don't know what color to paint it. I'm stuck between the RSR orange or the classic white with the Blue/ red stripes on hood/tail.like the new prototype racers. I hope to have the body work done in the next few weeks. and a few things on the cage still to do. I took out all of the sunroof and will be putting on a steel or fiberglass roof skin. Fiberglass doors a plus.
thanks again
Shawn

Color

Your project looks like fun.

GP White is always a safe bet and I've always thought P-cars looked great in white anyway.

However, I LOVE the crazy RSR colors too! Orange, Yellow, Blue or Green. I'm not sure it's an RSR color, but I really like this yellowish/orange (more yellow then orange...) It's like a bright yellow with a tinge of orange in it. I think the Hummer H2's have a similair color. It'd look great on a fat 911 with the "Carrara" or "Porsche" side logos.

Wow, great progress !! You have quite the fabrication skills (the roll cage gave it away).
I am partial to the white also. It makes for a very clean look...especially if it accentuated with red & blue stripes

As you probably already know, if you're going to race, be sure to check the rules regarding cages to see what required and what's not.

Good luck!! I've been building a car for the last ~20mo's.

more photos

well to day i got the pass. side in primer and it is ready for a final sand for paint.
I am stripping it down to bare metal to do this right. the car had @ 8 layers of paint so it must all come off. after i get most of the body done then i will finish up the inside, then i can pull all of the suspension off and focus on the wheel wheels and underside of car. I still have to remove the oil lines/tank. This is somewhat of a full restoration/race car build. I still have to cut the rest of the roof off to put a none sunroof skin on.There will be no corners cut.
Thanks for looking.

Smile more photos

got a lot done this weekend.
like taking down suspension cleaning up wheel well area taking off fender finishing up the inside of that, got the wheel well area all recoated with Wurth coatings. lots of cleaning/sanding. got the inner fender in paint and bolted back up. the passengers side of car is at final sand for paint. the roof is now cut out but i still need to trim it up some. the rear window frame area is ready for paint/ the roof was stripped and primed also. added the knee bar on the cage. took out oil tank/ rest of lines.
tomorrow i will turn car around and finish up the drivers side. I am doing this one at home because my new shop just isn't ready yet and it is far from home so i keep my personal toy build at home. so far this has been of of the greatest cars i've work with. there is a ton of sanding but this car is so solid. there is only one small spot of rust i found. I will post all of the repair as well when i get to it. should be this week sometime.
thanks for all the comments

Looking good. You'll definitely want to ditch the trombone cooler. It won't keep your car cool long enough to even make it down the grid let alone for a whole track session.

Did you remove the roof to weld the cage?

Thumbs up update

well i got all the new sub structure for the new rear seat area done. i plane to make carbonfiber panels to cover it up and will make it removable. I got the seat mounting done for the driver. That was lowered @ 2 inches, i wanted to get the seat as low to the floor but still be able to see well. It was a bit tricky, i am 5'10 so getting it just right was tuff but i got it right where i like. I got all the paint stripped off the door jam area. Also got the rest of the front windshield frame all in final prime. I added a cross bar on the main hoop but i am not happy with it. I have not worked on it for a few days due to selling parts and cars. I finely figured out how I'm going to paint it. It will be awesome so when its painted you will all say WOW. yup WOW.
( i hope ). Thanks for looking
