Classing a '73 911 RSR clone in SCCA
Hey Guys,
I have a '73 911 RSR clone that I've raced in some vintage and PCA stuff, but I'd like to get it classed in SCCA so I can run it more often. Just wondering if you can help narrow down the possibilities. These are some of the specs of the car: 1969 tub built to 1973 RSR specs 3.0 liter twin plug 330ish HP 2040 pounds wet full cage fuel cell 915 gearbox I ran the car at the Kohler Int'l Challenge in 2010 and won the GTO class in Group 6. Since then, the car's had some improvements, but it will run a lap at Road America in the 2:30 range. Thanks for the help! |
Tried to add a couple photos but didn't work. Maybe I don't have enough posts yet.

Try post link to the pictures.

330 ish is NICE out of a 3.0L.
Sorry I can't help with your original request but.... mind if I ask about that motor! What are you doing for feeding it? |
You have a copy of the GCRs, of course. I'd try GT2 for starters in a National class to see what, if anything, you'd have to change to fit. Of course, the top running Porsches in this class are Cup cars. Your weight to HP ratio is actually better than that of a Cup car, but I think you may need more 330 hp to compensate for their better aero and suspension. 911s also used to run in GT3, but you don't see that much any more, and your motor may be too big. For Regionals, doesn't ITE stand for IT Everything?

Walt,
I could be wrong but, this is what the GCR has to say about spark plugs in GT2-3: Any distributor or transistorized ignition system (including crank triggered), firing the same number of spark plugs as the original distributor, may be used. Peter said he is running twin plugs, unless his car came with twin plugs.... |
Well, if the 1973 2.8 liter RSR is allowed in GT2, it had twin plugs from the get go. I do know that twin plugging is not allowed in many SCCA sedan classes. I do know that you can run a 3.0 motor (or even a larger one in some cases), as a friend has run there maybe five years ago. 3.0 is probably better, as it doesn't need rare, if obtainable at all, parts like the special valves sizes and valve angles the RSRs ran.
