Neck restraint with open face helmet?

According to HANS, they are certified for use with an open face helmet. Their crash videos with an open face are on the net. They state that in a crash, the force is absorbed through the forehead...

Does this mean the other should work with an open face helmet too? Anyone know...

Thanks.

Not sure on that, but I'd stay away from open-face helmets personally. Less protection from large debris. It happens. I've seen broken brake rotors go right through a windshield.

Yes, Chris is right. If I were autocrossing only, I would use an open face helmet. But, once you get on the big track, you really should move to a closed face helmet.

Open face for AX. Full face helmet on the track to protect the eye candy.

Do you guys ride with the face shield down? I have yet to see one person at a hpde with the face shield down. Usually, the face shield has been removed altogether...

Down most of the time. Sometimes open just a bit to allow more ventilation. No smart person would remove the shield.....

I agree with everyone above, full face and visor down (cracked) or sunglasses for the track. I can't quiet remember which one(s) but some clubs out here require either the shields down or sunglasses. NASA maybe?

"it's better to have and not need than to need and not have!"

use as much protection as you can possibly use, if you are involved in this sport long enough there will eventually come a time when you are thankful that you had the protection.

Most pro rally drivers use open face helmets and HANS devices.

Is the OP doing rallies? If he is, then he might consider an open face helmet. Otherwise, closed face is the way to go.

it's not the chin bar that holds your helmet on your head at least i hope not any ways !
head and neck systems work with open or close face helmets .
but like every one said if your not doing rally racing then no need for a open face .
with auto cross your in the car for a few minutes and if you get over heated that fast maybe it's time to start working out because your way out of shape.

I used to wear a full face helmet and leave the visor up and wear sunglasses. I had a right side impact while instructing where the side view mirror came into the car and hit me in the eyeport of the helmet. Knocked the sunglasses into my face but luckily no injury. Ever since then its no sunglasses and visor down. i bought a tinted visor and it stays down.... always. I do leave it cracked so air gets in but keeps the tire clag and and such out.

Does it make a difference if it's just hpde? There is no tire slag or crap flying into the car...

I have an open helmet right now, will soon buy a full face again. The open helmet is so much more comfortable... Sigh...

I used to because of the heat.. ...but prefer it down and now have a helmet blower and keep it closed...

A knit cap would be even more comfortable. You see my point...

We all agree it is safer to use a full face helmet in any race/rally/autocross environment.

Do not sacrifice safety for comfort.

When I first started ax, there was a lot of discussion about full face helmets and airbags being a dangerous combo. The idea being that an inflated airbag under the chin of a full face helmet could case spine injuries.
I bought a FF anyway, but I've been thinking of going to an open face because of the pia of putting on glasses under the FF.

The VAST majority of rally drivers run with open face helmets and we're required to run HANS also. This includes WRC drivers. I feel that much of the concern about open face helmets stems from open wheel cars and somehow, this is transferred to closed wheel driving.

Trust me, these guys are so much faster then we could ever be.
