Superb 1974 914 2.0

1974 Porsche 914-4, 2 liter Re-commissioned Survivor

This is an absolutely stunning 1974 Porsche 914-4 2.0 in as new, original condition, with very slight tasteful mods. Original numbers matching motor. I found the car 3 years ago in very original condition. Car was originally sold in California, and is believed to have always been here. I have traced ownership back 10 years, and believe the indicated 79,600 miles to be correct. The originally issued, California blue plates are fitted, and come with the car.

Original paint was in fairly good shape, but the doors on both sides were full of parking lot dings. That and metal repair for removing the AC meant a repaint in the correct Bahia Red.

The motor was removed, interior, trim and all rubber removed. Restoration Design trunk floor and engine shelf panels were professionally welded in to remedy the poorly installed dealer air conditioning. A new battery tray was also fitted since the old one was in the way of the engine shelf repair.

All the minor bumps were professionally repaired, much of the original undercoating was removed from wheel areas, seam sealer was added to floor pan, and the correct Bahia Red was laid down in 2 stage paint. The glass was not removed for this paint since it appeared to be original glass, with a small California import decal visible on the windshield.

While out, the motor was refurbished with new gaskets and seals wherever possible, tins were straightened and powder coated. The D Jet fuel injection system was refurbished, and all new hoses installed. Before installing the motor, a new fuel injection harness was sourced from Jeff Bowlsby, and relay board was serviced.

Rear suspension was freshened with new bushings, new bearings, trailing arms were inspected and re-finished. New Bilstein shocks and 100# springs were next, then new soft lines and PMB restored calipers were installed with Porter pads.

Front suspension also received new bushings, ball joints, PMB restored calipers, Porter pads, and brake lines. Struts were left intact as no wear or leaking was evident.

Freshly rechromed front and rear bumpers were added without bumperette holes to give a clean fresh look. Front driving lights were replaced with a pair of period Pilot driving lights.

A set of used stainless steel heat exchangers were installed, with a new twin chrome tipped triad exhaust. Steel rear valance was modified to fit the second tip.

Inside, new German loop carpeting was sourced from 914 rubber, all vinyl was repaired and re-dyed, and new Cocoa Mats were added. All gauges were checked for operation, and LED lights added to aid visibility.

A new front trunk board was fabricated and covered in outdoor carpeting which is stronger and thicker than the original person. The same carpeting was addd to the targa top headliner. Fuel tank was removed, flushed and new stainless steel fuel lines installed.

While reassembling all new rubber trim and much of the brightwork was replaced with quality parts from 914 Rubber. Rear trundled struts were added because I hate the stock torsion bar setup.

Once motor was re-installed, the car was tuned and checked over by Porsche of Palm Springs, with Porsche Classic certified technicians performing all work. A 123ignition distributor was added, to modernize ignition and aid tuning, and coil was moved to the stock bus location.

The car runs and drives perfectly. A slight nick of second gear is noted when hurrying an upshift from first. There is absolutely no play or movement in steering at speed.

All lights operate as the should. Wipers and horn as well. The windshield squatter is non operational, due to missing hoses. The front air box fan and the rear heat fan are also not functioning at this time, although I can certainly address this upon sale. Just haven’t had time to get to them.

This is as perfect a California survivor car as I have ever seen in 25 years of 914 collecting. I am very confident in the work put into this 914-4 2.0
