To buy V6 or Turbo Cayenne
I have been looking at buying a Porsche SUV and have two good opportunities. One is a 2012 base V6 with about 70k miles. Looks nice and clean. Seller seems good, new transfer case, maintenance look to be a priority. The second one is a 2011 Turbo Cayenne with 60k miles at a dealer. Both are priced appropriately for what they are.
Just looking for some advise on the benefits and pitfalls between these two. Also any thing I should be looking for during inspection and drive. Thanks |
I cannot imagine any reason to buy the V6 over the turbo if the condition is the same...unless price is the issue. There is little difference in gas mileage and the Turbo has significantly better HP/torque...and are generally much better optioned. There are no real maintenance issues that differ greatly that I am aware of.

Yes the V6 was closer and less money. The Turbo is a bit more time commitment to get but I am leaning that way. Just waiting for the dealer to get organized. They told me it was sent it to the Porsche dealer for inspection. It has been there for two weeks??

They are two totally different animals, but even if they both cost the same the turbo is a lot more on the maintenance side, everything tighter to get to and more components to wear.if the higher cost of maintenance is not an issue for your pocket then to me it is a no brainer go with the turbo

The turbo will be option to a MUCH higher level than a base model.

Thanks for the responses. The V6 sold quickly and the turbo had some mileage discrepancies that the dealer had not answer for so I passed on that. It just seems odd that a car can loose 14k on the Carfax over a year when it should be gaining mileage.

just saw this topic. I went for the V6 as I didn't want the high cost of maintenance on the Turbo. No doubt it is quicker, more optioned etc etc, but check out the part cost for brakes, suspension etc (plus labor, if you don't do the work yourself).... and the depreciation on these cars are crazy, cuz who would want to spend that kind of money on a used car when it gets up there in age? Mine is a 2009 and it has performed admirably for me with expected maintenance for wear items. I put coilovers, 22s on mine, that was the splurge I did. Wanted to do the exhaust but didn't think $1000 was worth it. For me the V6 was the ticket.

I've been driving a V6 for 200k miles. No issues. Daily driver. Good enough
I always have to hear from friends about the hefty repair bills from the TT. |
200k miles!! so 321k KM! that is impressive. mine has 200k KM so I'm thinking ima gonna drive it into the ground! Any maintenance issues other than brakes, lights, oil changes etc? The only thing I experienced is changing the heater fan out twice so far. what about your rear hatch arms?

2 full tune ups. Belts coils plugs
The flex pipes after the cats started leaking at 130k Couple of noisy control arms New cat whole thing assembly I think it was close to 5k in parts A shop removed all pipes and welded SS flexes for 1.2k. I change tranny and differential fluids every other year..... Fancy xenon bulbs.... Twice. And one battery I want to see how many miles I can do..... Don't drive so many miles anymore... we'll see |
Funny thing people go to forums to ask about problems. Or write about issues
My 2012 cayenne with the bullet proof cast iron VR6 block engine has been very reliable Ohhh and I change oil every 5k and transfer fluid every 10k Brakes.... Yes.... Sometimes |
I have a 2004 TT with about 200K miles. I change the oil now and then...probably at over 10K miles. Never the transfer fluid. I top off the antifreeze when the sensor tells me it is low.
Something wears out or breaks now and then. I have had to replace the AC compressor (it was making a horrible noise that was being transmitted into the drive line...thought I had spun a rod or worse. I replaced the blower fan, the fuel pumps and paid to have the radiator lines replaced with aluminum ones. I also replaced the aux air pumps. I did the jimmy fix on the driveshaft that cost $7. I have replaced the battery once and the brakes, wiper blades, and tires more than once. I had the belt replaced as preventative maintenance. Now I need to replace an oxygen sensor. It drinks a lot of gas and uses a lot of tires. |
