Tensioner Cover leaks
So I didn't have time to change my wife's oil and rear brakes on her 2012 Cayenne so I took it to a Porsche tech I know (works at a Lambo dealership) and he told me her chain tensioner covers are starting to leak.
He told me it's a VERY common issue and Porsche recommends full engine out to fix at $$$$. He said he's done them with the engine in at about 20 hours labour (still $$$). He told me to check my Macan as it's still under warranty and it is a very common issue with them as well, and again; engine out. I asked about the root cause and he said it was due to hollow bolts torqued to tension that eventually fail and the oil drips out. BTW he said Porsche will not work on them or fix them if they are just weeping even though they know they will fail.... Now I have to break the news to the misses ![]() Everybody drop the underbelly pan and have a look.

Have a 2010 Cayenne GTS, just did an oil change and see I have a leak.
My question is - if its due to hollow bolts that fail, should it not be possible to just replace the hollow bolts and re torque them? Why would you need to remove the whole motor just to replace a leaking chain tensioner cover I wonder? Maybe LN Engineering will come up with a solution ![]()

The tech I spoke with said he has done a few in the car, but it’s hard and also not “Porsche procedure” if you are getting it done at the dealer. Also they are now using steel so I wonder about galvanic corrosion going forward…
These guys developed a kit for the Macan’s : https://flat6motorsports.com/collections/macan-engine/products/flat-6-motorsports-leaking-timing-cover-solution-macan Also I think engine out is in case the bolts broke in the threads, doubt you could get them out with the engine in.

Got an appointment on the 14th to “verify the cause”.
Seems pretty evident to me… ![]() ![]() I’ll find out about the Cayenne while I’m there and see how much Porsche will good will on it.

Update:
Had it in for tensioner leaks, they can now just replace the bolts without dropping the engine. They also said they put some tracer power on it to see if it leaks again?? They said if it does leak they will replace the gasket. We’ll see…
