Michellen Latitude tyres shredding
 

I have a 2009 Cayenne 3l Diesel with 140km (80k miles)
The front tyres have started to shred lumps about 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch thick from the inner tred line after about 20K km
The rear right blew out at 17K km and I threw the other one out and replaced my rear tyres with Continental Decibels and kept the fronts.
I am not sure if the blow out was related to the shredding now seen in the front tyres
Has anyone seen this problem.
My wheel balance was perfect, front end alignment the same, no vibrations or tracking problems .

Wow, I have the same issues, I go through tires every 2-years or less and I don't drive very much. I know these cars are heavy and this is to be expected to some extent, however the inner wear is not normal.

On my Cayenne I have custom rims, 22" in diameter and I suspected this was causing my wear but it was not. My alignment was good as well, I just bought a new set of tires this past weekend and I've gone back to my original/factory rims until I figure out the problem. What I have learned thus far is that my 22" inch rim tires are only available in a load weight rating of "106 or 107" but my Cayenne requires a tire with load rating of "109". I also do on occasion tow with my Cayenne, the inner tire wear is on every tire (front/rear) but I have also noticed slower outer tire wear as well on all four. I'm leaning towards the tire load as the problem for my 22's, I'll monitor the wear on my new tires with factor 18" rims.

Let me know if you find anything out.

I have read of inner and outer tyre wear in 20 inch Cayenne tyres,
British web sites say the Porsche wheel alignment specs are incorrect for larger wheels.
And suggest you take your car to a front end specialist not an OPC
Mine are 18's with 255 55. 18 ZR 109 correctly specked for my car.
The Michelin experts in my area have seen my tyres and said that it was due to the combination of soft road tyres and roundabouts which have proliferated in my area.
I'm not sure I believe this and have replaced them with Continental Decibels.

My car came with Continental DWS. They wore evenly, but faster than I liked. When I replaced them, I went with the Latitudes as I had very good luck with them on other vehicles. They were a lot more expensive and wore faster and less evenly. When I replaced them, I went back to the much cheaper DWS. They still wear faster than I would like, but are perfectly even and cost a lot less. I imagine that a vehicle as heavy as a Cayenne is just going to rapidly wear a performance tire. I use the factory 275/40-20 for my turbo
