Gas cap and lift gate door switches
On a 2005 Cayenne, mine anyway, there are switches to open the gas cap and lift gate. They do nothing. I saw someone, not here and it was a really old post with no answers, saying just pop the receptacle out of the door and replace the switches.
Good idea. Does anyone know if that actually works? Later on, answering my own question, it does. Fairly easily done with a panel puller tool at the front of the receptacle, try to get under it off enter. The front, (towards the front of the car), end of the receptacle is clipped in with one clip at the center, the rear has two clips. On the gas cap switch the ground is the upper left of the connector, 12V directly below that. I jumped my 12V to the pin next to it, gas cap opens. Time for a new switch. I then plugged my lift gate switch into the gas door connector, the connections are the same, and pulling the lift gate switch opened the gas cap door. So now I know my gas cap door switch is bad, and my lift gate switch is not. Bad news is that pulling a known good switch won't open my lift gate, good news is that I don't care a lot, I can open the lift gate at the gate. I'll still try to fix it, but I'll go after other problems first. Like the lift gate not staying open. Well, next day edit, I took the bad (gas cap door) switch apart, plugged it back in to the connector, and hand pressed the switch button, it worked. It's the backside button, (towards the rear of the car when in place), there is one toward the front that I don't think does anything. I put a washer on top of the button, it works fine now. I think that what happened is the plastic post that depresses the button got a little worn, and it wasn't pushing it far enough. The switches will come out of the housing, then the switches come apart. They are held in the housing by four clips, two on either side, it requires a little patience to get them out, one side you can see, the other you can't. Once you have them out then they each come apart top to bottom, there are pins on both sides. If you try this, open the switch over a towel or something, and keep it close to the towel. On the top half of the switch there are springs, the bottom has two ball bearings. I think to make the rocking motion easy. Anyhow, those fall out easily, by some miracle I found mine in the street. The springs are in holes, the ball bearings just sit in a slight depression. Last edited by 88cs; 02-14-2016 at 10:34 PM.. |

Having established that, does anyone know where to get the part number for the switches?
Here is what it shows on PET. ![]() It shows that they are there, the housing and switches, (below the 3), but no part numbers. That's as close as I've gotten. Last edited by 88cs; 02-14-2016 at 10:36 PM.. |
