2008 Cayenne S engine shot - rebuild or replace?
First, my apologies - I hate registering on a forum and immediately start asking questions, but I'm in a bit of a bind. Here's why:

My mechanic removed one cylinder head and then called me - the other two that aren't TDC are the same, so I'm assuming that a) the rest is the same, and b) whoever was the previous owner was an idiot and floored it before the engine was decently warmed up. I have two questions - rebuild or buy a second hand engine? Both come with risks, I'm especially anxious about resleeving an aluminum block, not sure we have anyone in Toronto, Canada (where I live) with a good reputation. The second one - there's a GTS engine for sale on ebay. The seller says it'll fit an S, and advertises so. My mechanic reckons it's going to also require transplanting electronics. Who is right? Given the fact that I cannot work around the issue with the cold, I may replace the engine and sell it, then get a turbo which seems to not have the "do not drive in Toronto in winter" issue :-). Still leaves me wondering whether the GTS block will fit. Research indicates is the air intake and the ECU that give the extra PS, I think that a larger air intake shouldn't hurt with the regular S ECU. But spending $$$$$ to try it out may not be the smartest way forward. I guess I'll see how nice the local Porsche dealer is with handing out info...

Why wouldn't you just fit the GTS engine block and use your existing manifold and plenum? Then all the electronics would be the same.

Can't you get one of the cab heaters used in Europe? My CTTS is left-hand drive from Germany and has the heater. It works very well and can be set up on a daily timer to warn up the engine block and cabin.

No power required. The factory fitted heater runs off petrol and can be set on timed start and for 30 minute duration. Porsche call it a parking heater.

I also have a BMW X5 and that has a heater but that one is diesel fuel. I'm sure you could retro fit one from other makes if you wanted to.

To follow up: I got the GTS engine, and it's running. There's only one little problem left, apparently the GTS engine has a slight difference - there's a fuel temp sensor on the new engine in the back that isn't there on my (slightly older?) engine, no spot to connect the sensor on the ECU, and - the fun bit - it not being connected triggers the engine light. Hope my mechanic will figure out what to do ;-)
