Noise from Power Steering

My 2004 Cayenne S has starting making noises like a goat when turning the steering wheel. It sounds funny at the moment but I am worried it's going to progress to sounds like a cash register makes.
All it takes is a slight touch on the steering wheel and it starts it's bleeting groan.
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Rob - other than the noise, have you noticed a change in the overall performance? Does it seem like the wheel is harder to turn? Are the power steering fluid levels proper?

I would check the fluid level, but no other ideas

I just cured this problem. The noise I had was most noticeable during initial cold start. The problem turned out to be a combination of me adding the wrong fluid and a clogged filter in the reservoir. The filter is attached to the reservoir so the reservoir needs to be replaced. When the filter is clogged the pump starves for fluid when it needs to draw from the reservoir.

Also the fluid is very particular. Ordinary power steering fluid will not work correctly and could damage the seals. The correct fluid is Pentosin CHF 202.

I had the same problem and mine was low fluid, I did a flush and it works + sounds perfect now.

Check also the heat shield if it is rubbing against the steering shaft.

I just had my oil changed and when I got the truck back I noticed a squeak when turning the steering wheel. I checked my fluid, it was below the min mark.

Using the proper fluid I topped it off. The sound may have improved slightly, but still noticeable.

My problem could very well be the heat shield. Thanks for the info.

EDIT: I took the truck out today, sound gone. Issue was likely low power steering fluid.
