Not for the purists - 3.2 flat 6 1971 VW camper

So my camper restored is coming on well, 3.2 with 915 all done, air ride, electronic parking brake etc etc etc.

So I was going down the route of trying to find a set of 1985 911 gauges (the engine came from a 1985) but they are impossible to find and pretty hard to customise a dash in a camper to look right.

So on one of the car programmes on Discovery Turbo(called Velocity in the US) I saw one of the programmes where a vintage restoration has a digital dash conversion where you could change gauge styles etc. Problem is, I can't remember if it was Kind, Wheeler Dealers or something else.

Does anyone know who makes these kind of conversions?

I would think the gauges do not have to be exactly '85. There is a date range that will work. A big factor would be the speedo pick up as there is electrical and mechanical. On a regular basis gauge sets come up for sale on pelican. Personally, I would see if I could use porsche gauges that would look great.

The biggest problem I see that you have is the fact that you have not loaded any pics of your camper on here.

Good luck in whatever direction you take!

Dakota digital has a retrotech series that pretty cool
Nothing soecifically for the Porsche or VW but if you can put a 3.2 and a 915 into a camper then I'm sure you can make something work.

I’d talk to North Hollywood Speedometer (or Palo Alto Speedometer) to see what they may be able to do for you as they both are well versed on customizing gauges. Please post pics as 6 cylinder VW buses are great! Porsche actually made some 911 engined Synchros back in the day for friends of the factory.

So, a few pics of my build are here:http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/1033787-unusual-3-2-build.html

So, I am sure with enough effort and money I could get a set of gauges, my issue is that the shape of a 911 dash is completely different to a VW Van dash so making them look "oem" would be near impossible.

Seen the dakota stuff but what I actually saw on TV was an LED screen with customisable gauges that you could change, much like modern audis and VW's. Any other ideas?

You can fit the stock gauges in the dash. I made the dash using .250" aluminum plate.
For oil cooling I bought a Mocal kit with metric fittings to fit the oil line coming off the motor and the oil tank. I ordered a length of s/s braided hose and installed the fittings. I mounted a Mocal 930 oil cooler between the frame rails.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1566091263.jpg
