V8 conversion w/ 915 trans
Hello!, I noticed a nice 1976 911 for sale with a renegade V8 @ almost 400 hp using a 915 transaxle. Are these trannies the common one used for these conversions? I'm just curious because i've always been told a 915 wont survive over 300 rwhp, although I have 355 rwhp in my 911 and its been fines for years & years.
Thanks, |
I almost purchased that exact car in 2018 from a person in Southern California. It was listed on Craigslist for $29k without the wheels and $31k with them if I remember correctly. I ultimately didn't buy the car for the same reason you seem to be hesitant.
First gear is unusable from what I understand. I'm sure it'll last a while if you baby it, but what is the point of having a car with 376hp/461tq when you have to baby it? I don't know what the auction will end up at, but if you can afford the car and a 930/G50 transaxle I'd definitely recommend it. It's far cleaner than the one I ultimately purchased and with the upgrade would be an incredibly fun car. Kind of curious why it is for sale after the current owner has had it for only 1.5 years. |
I have an 80 slant nose with a 383 (450hp) and 915 which was modified at CMS with tall gears and other major modifications setup for Lime Rock. Selling if interested but needs to be put back together...

I had already acquired a short bellhousing 930 4sp for the turbo motor that will now connect to an LS7.

Thanks fellas, I was mostly curious how the 915 is holding up in front of that V8 torque. I'm not in the market, but i'd love to do a 944T LS V8 swap oneday.

My 915 is built balls tough ...Mine is mimicking the 930....... 1st gear is usable. I have tall gears 3 to 5th gear, I've upgraded to 930 bearings. The CMS diff plate,,,,, the 77 being a Mag tranny came with the steel insert (See rennspeed.com) Basically address the weak points,, and you have a race car tranny,,, which has always been raced successfully. I'm running stage 2 clutch 99 LS1 stock forum wave tech posi (boys its all balls) My tranny is very "stout" I'm very happy with it. The 930 is great but 915 can be great too.

Did you end up buying something else? Apparently the seller is getting rid of it to make room for a C8 he purchased. |

Sitting at $20k with 50 min left. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I wasn't in the middle of a relocation.
I'm sure it'll go RNM though. ***EDIT*** Topped out at $36,500. Pretty fair I'd say. |
I did a SBC with 400 hp mated to an 83 915 trans. Purchased an expensive Dual clutch kit, Kevlar on one side bla bla bla. The trans survived but the clutch starts to slip after 500 miles, save your money and time.
