Subaru Conversion

Does anyone know of shops that specialize in installing a Subaru engine in a early 912
Thanks

I’m building a Subaru swapped 912, going for a super period correct look with hidden rads under the fenders.

Thanks Andy I know this swap has been done several times. I have a 69 912. An EZ 30 with fender radiators an a 915 gear box is what I was thinking about. I would like to swap in a Porsche engine but a 3.2 or 3.6 is very expensive at today’s prices. Any idea of shops that do the conversion. I’m currently working overseas is the only reason I ask. I look forward to hearing from you as you undertake the swap in your 912
Thanks
Michael

I have a purpose built 915 with a 383 in case you are looking for something a little more hefty...

I agree, a Porsche 3.2 is loosing proposition with todays INSANE prices. Weird thing is porsche -6 swapped 912s actually seem to sell for LESS than a -4 912, as investors only want original cars. A Porsche 3.2 core will cost about $12,000, then another $15,000 - $20,000 in parts and machine work. So, spending another $35,000 on an engine for for car that's only worth about $30,000, LOL, don't think it makes a lot of sense.

Nice thing about going the Subaru route is much lower cooling requirements than a Chevy V8, so you can use tucked radiators in the fenders. With a Chevy, you have to stick a giant radiator in the trunk, and ruin the trunk.

The issue with the EZ and the 915, is the EZ has an integrated oil-pan that sits really low, and you'll run into ground clearance issues. That's why, with an EZ, a cable-shift Subaru 6-speed with a reversed ring+pinion is a better choice, because it lifts up the engine.

I'm not aware of any companies that do a Porsche conversion, lots that do VW conversion, might check with somebody like https://smallcar.com/.

The radiators I'm fabricating are using a Chevy Bel-Air radiator sawed in half and welded, if my calculations are correct, they should cool up to about 300 hp. They're also using molded fiberglass ducts, and are fully ducted.

I've decided to go the small / light route, with a built N/A 2.5, about 210 hp, and less weight than the original VW engine. With a smaller, lighter engine, you can use smaller radiators, smaller brakes, keep the weight down.

I've got a build page on facebook:

Hey man, it's a great question. One that I don't have the answer to this second. The hope is 6 months or less?
