Why not?!?!
After attending the engine building class with full intention of rebuilding my lil 3L with a lil more pep, I find myself here... looking and learning.
I can't find a down side to a nice LS swap! Lighter, stronger, more mower, cheaper parts, more durable..... My SC is a modified repaint and will never go up in value from my purchase a few years ago. Dropping another $15K worth of engine just makes it worse IMO. BUT, dropping an LS in and a iroc or RSR body on it will return driving smiles for the next 20 years, haters be damned. :D My biggest concern is what/how to replace the 915, for which I have ZERO love. I saw the Subaru trans swap, and have heard about a g96 swap being reasonable. The 930 is a tank, but is typical Porsche expensive... Any pointers, other than "sell it and buy a Vette" |
Subaru trans will break, g96 is a great choice just needs a good amount of fab work to fit

Yea, I know the Subaru 5 speed isn't amazing. Maybe a built Subaru 5 speed, still a cheaper option.
I figure replacing a Subaru 5 speed a a ton cheaper than rebuilding a 915, and cheaper than a 930 box. I could probably eat 7 Subaru boxes for the price of one 930 box. |
A Subaru PPG box will run you 10k. That’s g50 money

I agree, spending minimum $15,000 on a rebuild makes zero sense. I’ve got a 76 912, and makes absolutely zero sense spending $30,000 to buy a core Porsche flat-6 and trans, and build them to stick into a $30,000 car. Advise Is really, really figure out what kind of engine character you like: do you prefer a lighter higher revving smaller engine, or a very torquey LS? Really do try to drive a Vette and see if you like the feel of the LS. If you find you prefer a lighter engine, a Subaru -6 turbo or VW VR6 are great choices. I’m personally going with a built normally aspirated Subaru 2.5 at around 215 hp and 275 lbs weight. If you prefer an LS, that’s a great choice also. Note that an LS will require more cooling capacity and bigger breaks than a lighter Subaru. The Subaru 5-speed is a decent trans, orders magnitude better than the 915, holds up fine behind an LS. LS makes a lot of sense to me....but maybe not in a 930! i sold this car a few years back. mast motorsports LS7 making 705 chp with short bellhousing transaxle....nice swap and plenty of power! just drove it on the street!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1639585566.jpg
