Is this in a Cayman? Looking forward to following your progress. Jumping into the porsche game soon and going to also be doing an LS swap which I will be documenting on the forum.

It is a 2003 Boxster S.

LS swap progress
I am in retirement. This project keeps me busy but is not a rush by any means.
A couple of things I have learned to help the next guy. Almost everything on this Boxster is accessed from below. Before starting this project know how you are going to raise and lower the car FREQUENTLY. Identify and mark the tubes, pipes, and lines to and from the engine. This will be very useful later on when plumbing the LS. I initially thought I would elevate the engine and transmission and lower the car and carve up the car to fit the engine. I was going to make my own engine frame. I cannot express how much more better it was for me to buy the engine and transmission support parts from Renegade. They have their parts so refined that it saved me immeasurable hours and effort in installing the engine and transmission into the car. The biggest problems I have run into so far are: 1. dressing the front of the engine to make the engine as short as possible 2. exhaust manifolds; most have interference problems. 3. Coolant routing is a nightmare. I have nearly solved these problems and will provide a follow up in time as I progress with this build.:) |

Awesome build, love that you are also using Toy Jet

Thanks. I think it will be running in another two week or so. Down to the last few hose clamps, steam vents, oil catch can, rocker arm torquing, and a gas fitting. Still need to make and modify engine covers. Most of the wiring is finished. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1664144354.jpg

Great looking build, can't wait to see the start up vid!

:)
Subscribed. I may be able to help with custom Fuel Hoses, as I have both Metric and AN6 Hose fittings for E-85 Rated Lifetime Hose. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1664547334.jpg (Just in case you might need same.) len.cummings @ verizon.net :) |
Looking really good man! All the hard work will be worth it once you get your first rip in it!
I'll build another one someday, just finished up a 911 cab for a guy, such good motors. John |
Thanks John
From time to time you and your videos have been of tremendous help. I'm sure you know but others might not that this project is not exactly simple. For me it started with the emergency brake cables and they have been forever in the way. The next challenge for me was the one belt balancer and shim. Of course, that set up making custom supports for the alternator and AC compressor. I went through three different exhaust manifolds before finding the right ones to eliminate interferences. The coolant system was a super challenge for me. The exhaust system is a lot of bending and welding. For me the wiring seemed a walk in the park. I harvested an original harness and computer and cross wired a few things and now have a clean dash. I have HP tuners and that made easy work of the computer. Started the car up last week and my junkyard LS squealed like belts but wasn't the belt. I drained the oil and it was more like mud. I'm pretty good at taking the engine out so I did. Took everything apart and crickets. I have no idea what was squealing but had the block cleaned and new cam bearings. Kinda wish that I had just bought a crate engine. Everything going back together right now. Like I said a while ago, If you are going to do a swap like this have a way to lift the car over and over. I'm retired so this extra two weeks or so keeps me busy. Not sure what I am going to do when she is finished. |
Started her up. Real close to a test drive. Need to get all the air out of the coolant and close up the firewall. As I said before this project is not for the novice, but it is not really that bad in the end. Thought I would update everyone on some of the challenges I had with wiring. I used the original engine wiring harness eliminating things not needed. Once I got the engine running, I eliminated almost all the wiring coming from the Porsche engine controller. My Boxster has a 996 cluster and I think everything is working. Starting from the left side of the cluster the voltmeter works as it always did. As far as I can tell the spedo is connected to the wheels and will work as before. The tachometer on the 03 is CAN buss from the engine controller. Porsch and my LS happen to have the same reluctor count so I simply tapped the Porsch crank speed into the LS crank sensor to get tach. I added a Porsche temp sensor to the LS and it goes through the Porsche engine controller and then CAN Buss to the cluster. The oil pressure alarm and gauge operate as before with the sensor moved to the LS. The Cluster oil level operation is fooled without an alarm with a 10 ohm resistor in place of the missing sensor. I had a lot of trouble with the fans. The Porsche ECM provide a ground for high and low fans and I have not been able to get the porsche ECM to operate fans. I can say the same thing for LS ECM. I added a 190 degree F grounding switch for the low speed fans and so the fans are still a project. In summary, my engine is running and most if not all the integration is working. Good Luck to anyone wanting to try this conversion and I hope some of this helps.

Thank you for the update!
Glad it's all working out for you and you're closer to that first ride! I've done some engine swaps with tricky electronic integration and it's definitely a learning curve but a fun one! I did an LS swap on a 76 scout traveller last summer and it was a breeze! NO ELECTRONICS aside from dash. I'll be doing this on my 87, so the only electronics will also be dash related. You're light years ahead of me, but posts like this keep me going. GL on the drive! |

cool build keep it up!

So I have been on the road for a while now. Except for the sound, the car is a real sleeper. Several challengers have been surprised at my second to third gear to 6000 rpm pull away with a short tire squeal into third. So far I have gotten all my investment back in fun. The build has been solid, not a single failure so far. I have to go get another emissions inspection in May so it has been operational for a year now. I need to sit down and take all my build notes and sketches and finalize them so that someone in the future will have an understanding of the integration without having to start from scratch. The cooling fans for example. Even I am not sure what is turning them on, Porsche controls, Chevy controls or temperture switchs I added or all of the above.

It sounds like you've been really enjoying the car since the last update! Good to hear you're satisfied with the results! It's certainly not a common swap on this chassis so documenting will no doubt help someone in the future. Thanks for the updates!
