Well. Ive finally gained some motivation to start working on the car again. I guess a lull here and there are expected...
I got the axle spacer on the passenger side and the new axle in place. I picked up a new drivers seat that ill be fabricating the base for hopefully this weekend. Last night I decided to polish one of my wheels after getting the tire put on the CORRECT direction... Got in a hurry when mounting them. .http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1730395065.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1730395065.jpg |
Really enjoy this thread. Thx for keeping it alive. I could look at that deep BBS wheel for hours...
|
Now that I'm digging into my '72 I just reread this thread and took a lot of screen captures for potential problem areas - Thanks!

Long post ahead. Sorry I havent made many updates lately, but the truth of the matter, most of these photos are from the last few days. I went a solid 2 months without touching the car... I spent every day and night for a month a half straight working to get the car ready for a show in November, and I was just short of making it. I spent alot of time away from my wife and kiddos to try and get it done so I spent the last few months making up for that!!!
Shortly after that show, I was working in my garage on something else, and my ADHD got the best of me and I started wet sanding the rear quarter panel. I will say, I eventually am re-painting the car. But for now this yellow will certainly work! Once I sanded and polished it, it really popped! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg A few random photos I took when the wheels were off the car. Another one of those, working in the garage on something else and decided to try and polish a wheel to see how it would turn out... Again, turned out awesome!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg I began working on the one thing that I did not want to start. But now that I have, it can be satisfying.. It can also make you want to punch a wall... This is a swapped car, and the chassis was completely stripped (poorly, wires just cut) when I got it. So I went with a Painless Performance Wiring harness... looking back, may have been easier to do an OEM wiring harness for lighting and accessories. But I don't think I could have found a used harness for what I paid for this one new.. All the wires are labeled where they go, and what they do.. I want to use as much of the OG switches and things possible. So I sat down and started studying the Porsche wiring diagram from 68, and figuring out where things need to tie in on the turn signal switch. It was slightly confusing trying to marry the two. But I finally managed to late last night. Turn signals work!!! Ill be starting on the headlight switch tonight. Im wanting it to be very clean as well, for my sake, and for future me, or anyone else thats working on the car.... So Im trimming all my wire fittings, and shrink wrapping everything... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.jpg Now here comes the "problem" that Im going to make the best I can for now.. I got a set of rough H5 headlights for cheap.. Id rather run these than the sugar scoops that came with the car. So I decided to start doing my best to clean these up. I managed to "polish" the inside of one of the lights. Its turning out somewhat clear. So It should work.. I dont plan to drive the car much at night. But in the case that I have to, it should work.. So I have new Hella bulbs, new pigtails, and retaining rings that should be here this week.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736435554.JPG Thats all for now.. Hopefully can update you all sooner than later next time!! Thanks for stopping by.. If youve made it this far, I want to be "fun" with this iteration of the car... I want to run a rsr "livery" on this yellow.... Anyone want to give any input on some stuff i should include or a full Livery I should do? I cant decide!! Or just leave it blank?? a few bad spots in the paint I was hoping to cover with decals.. Mainly the roof is the worst part.. |
I've always loved the "Marlboro" theme. Something badass about everyone smoking in the '70s. The red would probably clash with the yellow though.
Be careful at night, even with good lenses it'll surprise you at how poorly you can see ahead. I can't drive faster than about 55mph in my SC at night off the highway due to the poor lighting. |
Let there be light!
OEM turn signal stalk controls my turns, and my High beam as it should, and my oem headlight switch is wired. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736860250.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1736860250.jpg |
Loving these updates

No photo updates. But I got the headlights in completely last night. Brought the rings with me to work today so I can sand blast those and get a coat of black on them. The grey just doesn't look right. So I will get those Painted black and put back on the car.
I need to fix the hole in my back seat from the transmission clearing. And I have a small rust spot in the drivers side wheel well at the floor pinch weld. I need to fix those two things before the carpet gets here! I just ordered the RS kit from Newark Auto. Hopefully its a decent kit. Once carpet is in the car it will actually feel almost done! |

Made up some seat brackets this weekend. Late last night I finally got the brackets tacked in and the seats sitting on them to test everything out before burning it all in. Should work out perfect!! I plan to get bucket seats eventually, but for now these seats will do the job.
Once these are completely done, I need to cover the transmission hole in the back seat, and build a small stand for my shifter, and some minor patch/grommet work and then it’ll be ready for carpet, which showed up late last week! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738587563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738587563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738587563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738587563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1738587563.jpg |
Really coming along! What size front and rear tires are you using? Looks amazing.

How wide are you front fenders and rear quarters? They look like monsters! Love them. They look like the 14" rear quarters...

Quick update:
I finally got around to cutting out my dash “bezel” to hold my screen… I wanted somewhat of a oem feel to the dash, so I’m keeping the fuel gauge and the clock.. (it should be in this week). I took some rough measurements and threw it on the CNC and somehow the panel ended up just about perfect… I also built a “riser” for my shifter. I wanted it to sit just a tad higher, it is now pretty close to my right hand on the steering wheel. A quick and easy reach for the shifter. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741062816.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741062816.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741062816.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741062816.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1741062816.jpg |
i like the cf dash, and i also am putting a riser under my numeric shifter
|
Riser looks good. After watching the videos of the Maserati swap I'm wondering if it is best to cut the tunnel and then raise the entire thing up and run the coolant hoses through there...

Summer has snuck up on me for the 4th (or 5th?) year in a row. Luckily this time I really don’t have much to finish.. the motivation was lacking for a while but I’ve recently sparked interest again in getting this turd done… I rebuilt my front wheels a while back with BBS 17” halves. So now I’m 17x13.5 in the rear and a17x11 up front. Love the look, the rear fitment at certain angles looks a little off but not too bad that I’m going to worry about it. I have to continue patching the steel where the hump in the rear seat is. (I’ve started, just halted and never finished).
To do list: -Finish rear seat patch -carpet -door cards -address minor cooling system leak at the water manifold -possibly re do the brakes -remove oil pan and put some liquid gasket at the front and rear cover to stop leak -tidy up interior wiring -install bumpers -install windshield (for the second time) The list really isn’t that long. If I put my head down and just work I’d say 2 weeks I could have all this stuff done. I just need to do it!!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747050287.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747050287.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747050287.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747050287.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1747050287.jpg |
The lack of motivation is so real, especially getting into the summer months.
Super keen to see this one out and about, hopefully one day our paths can cross and we can rip around in our engine swapped 911s! |
Been a while! I finally got some motivation to get this damn thing done! Although it’s not there yet, we are getting real close. I finished up the rear seat area where I cut out for the trans. Is it pretty? No. But it’s functional. The panel to the left is bolted and gives me access to the shifter cables for maintenance/adjustments if needed. Next, I wasn’t sure how to bolt my lap harnesses in… This was what I came up with. Welded some small 5/16 plate to the outward panels on the interior. And then welded some to the interior tunnel…
My wonderful mother also re upholstered the upper door trim, and upholstered the door cards I had made. We just did them in some black vinyl for now, as we are just doing a RS panel. Couldn’t be happier with how they’re turning out! I also may or may not have a whale tail coming in the mail this week….. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1750633245.jpg |
Finished the passenger side door today. I’m slowly realizing my shop is a disaster. So I’m going to eat dinner, get the kids to bed, and clean the shop up around the car.. then maybe pull a late nighter and get the drivers done, or do it in the morning and then start on carpet!

Looking very nice

Haven’t posted an update in a while, for a few reasons, but the main being about 5 weeks ago my wife and I welcomed our son into the world! So I’ve been spending some quality time with the kiddos and the newborn. However, I’ve started back up as I’ve got a show to make September 6th… and I will be making it this time… The car is nearing completion…. Of vol. 1… I know I know it’ll never be done completely. But it’s nearing actually seeing the road. I’ve been trying to take my time and make sure things are done correctly, and not miss anything that I’ll have to come back and do as soon as it’s on the road. This project below was one of those preventative things. I always saw the oil cooler opening in comparison to my radiator opening and thought it wouldn’t be getting much air flow to the radiator… the issue was I am not a metal fabricator, nor do I have any tools for bending or anything like that. I can weld, and get by with what I need to. But sheet metal isn’t something I do much. So to complete this little project feels pretty good! A Ram air duct from the oil cooler opening to the radiator opening, should do the trick!
I’ll include a few photos of some of the other goodies I’ve done/got… -new LED classic look lights from Morimoto -headliner installed, completely done by my mom who is extremely talented. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754541737.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754542090.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754542090.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754542090.jpg |
Looking great! I'm slowly getting there also but you are way ahead of me!
|
Wow. Can't wait to see the final product.
|
It’s getting there! My dad came over the other night and helped me get the front and rear glass back in, when he left I put the pop out windows in… May need to massage the trim in some in the corners of the front but it turned out great! I go my coolant system “almost” bled, I haven’t started the car yet, so I’m sure it’ll take a little more. But I hope to get the car tuned this week if all goes as planned. Seats are also bolted in for good! A lot is happening quickly here at the end, getting closer by the day! It’s been a long 4.5 years working on this car.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754800508.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754800508.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1754800508.jpg |
Maiden voyage! Thursday evening I took the car in town to the gas station. I knew the tune was bad, but after 4.5 years I couldn’t resist. I caught some good gas station photos and thought the car was on fire on the way home. Turns out when I set ride height the tank was empty! I was rubbing pretty good up front. Got that taken care of and got the car tuned on Friday night, thing runs like a dream and pulls like none other!
Of course at the end of the tubing session we ran into a fuel issue, which ended up being vapor lock. Fuel in the cell was boiling due to an early style renegade tank, not enough ventilation. Hoping to get a new tank on the way, and re do my fuel system in a couple days and be on my way! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1755518727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1755518727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1755518727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1755518727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1755518727.jpg |
Great job!

Ive been a little MIA lately. Getting the car on the road was such a relief I kind of have been just enjoying it, and all the free time with my family now that every spare second isn't in the shop working on the car...
That being said, she's not 100% done yet, they say a project car is never done and I somewhat am starting to believe that... There are certainly a few things that I'm wanting to do sooner rather than later, but there's also a few things I am not worrying about until it comes time to repaint the car. (Under both the frunk and the engine bay areas). Now that the car is on the road, there are 2 things I really need to address.. The first being, the car runs too cool. I can't seem to get it above 185 degrees even on hot days.. So rather than install a thermostat, my plan is to build replaceable shields for the radiator duct that I can bolt on that have different variations of hole sizes to restrict air flow to the radiator... I've spoken to a few old rally drivers and they said this was the method they used so Im going to fire up the CNC, and get some acrylic and see what happens...The Second issue is not a huge issue, more just comfort, but over time this car has accumulated several holes under the dash from wiring and who knows what else.. When the car is "warm" Hot air seeps through these holes and hits you in the legs while driving.. Not as much now that ive installed the hood seal, but it still comes in a little. So I just need to take a day and figure out the best way to block all those off.. Other than those two things the car honestly runs amazing and is a blast to drive.. The 6 speed 996 gearbox makes it very enjoyable to drive, I will say at interstate speeds in 6th gear around 70-75 mph I am cruising at about 2700 RPM, which is a tad high, but nothing crazy! I have a couple more shows to attend this month and then the car will be in the shop for the winter, Ill start tackling the small stuff slowly and doing a once over on the suspension components to ensure nothing has come loose! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1759837411.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1759837411.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1759837411.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1759837411.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1759837411.jpg |
