Type 34 Karman Ghia with 2.4 MFI Motor
Hi all, new member to this forum. I have a Type 34 Karmann Ghia that has been fitted with a 72 911 2.4T MFI motor. As a new owner of Porsche power I have found this web site unbeleivably helpful in understanding what makes these motors tick.
Had a few issues getting the thing to run right, bit the info here she's running sweet now. I love the sounds that a MFI engine makes on full song. Nothing much can beat that. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1120823438.jpg |
Best bit. 2.4MFI powerhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1120823553.jpg

Nice, very nice!!!
|
neat! anyone know whats required for a swap like that? looks like plenty of room back there!
|
I will take some detail shots of the install if you want. Has extra bracing across the body between the shock towers and down the sides to support the rear engine mounts. Rear suspension has been changed to IRS. 10ltr oil tank is located in the front luggage compartment and oil lines do a full circuit around the car.
Body mods include, cut out for oil tank, clearancing of the rear of the engine bay and removal of a large piece of the rear valance to accomadate the large muffler. |
photos would be great!! :)
|
Yea, more pictures please!
|
|
That looks fantastic. There is a couple of 356's with 911 engines running around Melbourne too. More pics required!
|
Here are a couple more pics that I have on file. Will take some more over the weekend.
First one is Oil Tank location. Its fron mounted to balance out the weight a bit. As is the battery. Oil circulates thru 3/4 copper tubing down one sill (right side) to the motor and back up the left sill. Have replaced the spare Fuchs with a Porsche space saver. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125058031.jpg |
Recently fitted a nice pair of early Scat Procar Rally seats. These are Old Skool with proper stitching for the pattern not moulded. way more comfy than the crappy ones that were in it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125058221.jpg
|
Dash has a set of early 911 gauges complete with 7200 redline tacho. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125058349.jpg

Updated shot of the 2.4T MFI motor. Have fitted nice new stainless plug wires, Crane Hi6 ignition unit and generally cleaned it up. Future plans are o/hauling the throttle bodies and distrubutor. And when funds allow an new set of Stainless Steel heat exchangers. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125965587.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125965613.jpg

That looks amazing. Is it possible for you to get detailed pics of what sheet metal you needed to trim from the engine bay? Do you have a stock 911 muffler or a custom one? I am about to embark on a 2L 6cyl, 901 5spd swap into my 65 notchback. I can't wait. Any tips or advice? Here's the project car

Here is a couple of detail pics Matt. Basically you would need to remove all the inner panels from the rear of the car. Mine runs a 911 muffler so the rear valance has been cut below the bumper to accomadate this.
There is a cross brace fitted at the top of the engine bay and this supports the motor with a rubber mounted aluminium mounting. See pic. At the rear of the motor there is a long cross mount (similar to the porsche mounting) that is mounted very low. See pic also. At the front a hole has been cut in the RHS to house the 10ltr alloy oil tank. Oil is moved from front to rear thru 3/4 copper tubing running along the inner sills on both sides. If I was starting from scratch I would go for 1" Stainless all round. A remote oil filter is mounted horizontally beside the transmission on the return oil line. On the suction side the lines are all kept well below the center line of the motor to ensure that the main oil pump is always flooded with oil. Trans is a single side plate VW. Bolts right up with the right combination of clutch and pressure plate. If you are running MFI (like mine) you will need to run an extra fuel line. I use the original line as a return and fitted a larger 7mm supply line. Probably a little small and this may be changed one day on my car. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125993838.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125993858.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125993910.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125993967.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125994007.jpg |
Fitted this inline brass screen to filter out any large particulate bits that may find there way in to the oil tank. Probably overkill but it gives me some piece if mind.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1125994204.jpg

Thank you so much. I will be running the weber 40 IDA's, but I am going to install a larger diameter fuel line running through the tunnel. I was also thinking of installing the factory oil tank in the right rear qtr panel area, kinda like this
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1126064123.jpg I may also lose the 911 muffler in favor of a smaller unit that will fit inside the rear apron, but that's a ways away yet. I'm not quite sure how I am going to do it, but I wanna make it look like it's supposed to be there. |
Nice car dude!

This week I am about to emark on this journey. I have a Brazilian Puma which has Type 1 underpinnings. I have swing axles and I am converting to IRS py using the weld on clips with 86 944 Turbo trailing arms, axles, spring plates, brakes and parking brake etc. I have a 901 5 spd, with the parts I mentioned it is pretty much a bolt in for the trans. I am using 912 shifter, rod and coupler. A notch on the bottom of the pan is required for the shift rod as the trans sits lower. I am grafting the 912 shift tunnel. Transmission mount have to be fabricated, however that is the simplest of the jobs to do.
As for the 911 2.4 I am doing a similar frame brace between top of the frame and then down the sides and then connect them. This will support the rear of the engine. I will supply the pictures as I go. I also have the custom front hubs for the 944 t brakes in the front Gary |
I know this thread is a bit old but I want to bump it too.. ;)
Hi, we've been discussing your conversion earlier by E-mail. I just wanted to make sure you're running with stock IRS T-1/3 gearbox, right? Do you have the stock rearframe too without the rear gearbox support horns? I would like to know wether it is enough with the original front mount of the gearbox and a custom made rearmount to the engine. Thanks. |
Hi Hebster, thanks for the bump. Yep I am running the later IRS rear subframe wit out the rear horns.
You will need to fabricate a rear cross member and support and a centre support. The centre support in my car is an aluminium plate bolted to the top engine / gear box bolts. The standard T3 set up only has a front and rear mount. But the Flat 4 is a lot lighter than the flat 6. From memory a Flat 4 VW motor is around 100kgs. I am about to do some work to my Karman in the next couple of weeks to get ready for a long road trip (about 3000k's) and I will take a bunch of pictures while its up off the ground for you. |
Thanks Dean! Yes, the stock T-3 engine is 125 kilos compared with about 182 kilos (have I been told) for the Flat6.
It would be great if you can take detailed pictures of the engine mounts and supports you have on your car. Thanks again! |
BTW. I think that the engine ant tranny on a 911 is only mounted in the front of the gearbox as well as the rear of the engine too?
The only difference might be that the original 911 gearbox is stronger so it can handle the weight? |
Nice car, I've never seen a Type 34 before, and I've seen Karman Ghia's with pink fur on them - for real.:)
|
been a while since I posted this thread and I have been getting a few emails about my T34 so i thought I would post up some new pics.
Not done any more major work to the Karmann over the past year. Just been out and about enjoying it. I have managed to get the correct front bumper and fitted that. Trying to get it looking as stock as possible. see pic Was even used in a National Clothing Catalogue photo shoot earlier this year. See pic Took it to a VW only Drag Racing Day at a place called Heathcote in Victoria. Ran mid 15's all day. And the mightly 2.4mfi didnt miss a beat all day. Drove it 160ks to get home straight after too. That was a fun day. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191554029.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191554255.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191554431.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191554441.jpg |
Last one. I like this pic. Green Light and clutch dropped. Time stands still for 15secs he he ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1191554823.jpg

Wow ! ! !

Very nice car!!
I´m building a similar setup, a 65 razor with a -73 2.4T engine. A couple of years ago i had the engine in a fasty, pics seen below. That car is sold, but i kept the engine. http://i10.tinypic.com/81i2aoh.jpg http://i5.tinypic.com/6wnyucw.jpg http://i14.tinypic.com/6o1mlqq.jpg Here´s the new project. http://i2.tinypic.com/82vdyl1.jpg The rims are 8,5 in the rear and 7 in the front. http://i4.tinypic.com/86guija.jpg Cheers Stefan, Sweden |
Hey Greyne 57, I built and owned that same car you now own it used to have a 911s motor in it when I built it, when did you put the 2.4 i8n it?????
|
Hey Turburs930, nice to hear from a previous owner of my Ghia. The 2.0S motor was blown up on a dyno in Perth about 3 years ago. Its still in the possesion of the guy I purchased the Ghia off. The 2.4 was fitted just before I got it. Supplied by Swan Porsche parts in Perth. I have changed a few things in the time I have owned it. The oil line plumbing was causing a few problems, changed the seats. Few more things I would like to do some day too. Top of the wish list, is 944 brakes and a 5 speed box. Plus full lining with Dynamat so sound proof it a little better.
If you are in Melb, come along and have a look at it some day. |
Stefan, I look forward to seeing some build up pics of your T34. What gearbox you going to run??
|
I´m using a 901 gearbox, and 944 suspension in the rear.
In the front i havent decided yet what to use. Stefan |
Greyn57, where abouts in Melb are you, I have moved to Townsville Qld now and am currently rebuilding a 1982 930 turbo, I hope to have the motor back together in a couple of weeks.
Its great to see the Karmann is still going strong. |
Hi dean! As you allready have the IRS rearsuspension it is the simplest thing to convert to 944 brakes in the rear.
I guess I mentioned that I sold my T34 but still am doing a 911 conversion, but on a Type2 Double Cab now instead. The 944 stubaxles and bearinghousing including hubs, discs and calipers are a easy bolt-on to the VW trailingarms. I have allready done the rear conversion to my Doublecab. And I'm now starting to fit the 2,0l 911T engine to the rear... ;) Just mail me if you want more details on the brake conversion. SmileWavy |
hey Greyn57, pretty sure i saw you at Nambucca Heads last time... you were parked next to the dining area on sunday? i spent ages checking out that engine! must've been a heck of a trip up!
