single 48 idf

with all the carb trouble i've had lately, i'm tempted to sell my dual 40's and get a single 48 as it would get rid of several of my problems: linkage, and clearance, tuning.

it must be easier to tune a single carb, but what is the cost? top end I can sacrifice for reliability. I have seen one only once before on a (class 10 rail?) w/ type 4 engine and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this setup. I do believe that it is fabricated by fat performance out here in Orange.

the manifold looks like a teepee, and i need to know its height as well (clearance issue again).

thanks

What kind motor are you running? I would offer some suggestions but your posting is some what unlear as to what kind of clearencing, tuning, & linkage problems you are having. What kind of shroud are you using 911 style or VW style? etc; Duals win over a single carb anyday. Most retailer will tell you that also. Fat designed that manifold to fit over top of their big, bulky, tall 911 shroud. If you do not have one of those shroud you do not need it. Plus that design did not have alot of technology put into it. It was mainly designed for offroad racers restricted to one carb.

well, I do have a manx, and the piece of fiberglass that comes down over the engine is close to the top of the carbs... so close that I can't get a real set of air filters on them. Had foamies on, but I wasn't too happy with how much dust they let in in a desert environment. I am running the original 914 shroud. and have recently found the source of my tuning problem (blocked main jet).
So, my options are to shorten my manifolds (a lot of work), find shorter mainfolds (money), my dad suggests ducting the air through pipe (but I am very wary of this), or chop up the back of the car (easy, but I'd rather leave the vehicle in its original shape.

Thank you for your insight into the design of that manifold, If you have any recommendations, I'm ready.

Thanks,

The jets can get clogged on the duals easy. Have you looked into getting the CB Performance update kits for your carbs? this will help. Clearance problem.... if it was me I would find some of those 914 shorty manifolds or chop chop chop the body they actually look good that way with some tear drop taillights in them.
