porsche 356 C engine in a VW 181 Thing w/IRS
I'm sure someone has done this conversion before. Any help would be appreciated. My brain is starting to hurt with all this information. The throttle linkage and gas cable issue is one problem.
What really has me perplexed is the clutch interface. The following is what I have read (I'd rather not get involved with setting end play since I do not have the dial indicator, but I'll buy the tools if necc.): I'm installing a Porsche 356 engine into a 1974 VW Thing with a IRS Trans. The Trans 1st-2nd shift/gearing has been altered to work better with the 75hp 356 C(200mm FW) engine, but I'm confused about the throw out bearing clutch interface. I've read that you can use a 12v 912 flywheel (to get around the 6v, 356 flywheel issue), but I understand that the 912 Pressure plate is different than the 356 Pressure Plate bolt pattern, but I could and should use the 356 C or S 90 disc. I know the 912 FW will not work in the 356, but I think it should fit the 12v VW IRS Trans and starter? If the 912 FW will work, what shift forks (need to be welded onto the VW tranny) and throw out bearing should I use? I think a 356 741 trans shift fork with a 912 or a 356 C/SC throw out bearing will work? I could also have someone press on a 6v starter gear onto my 12v VW starter and use the stock 356 flywheel (356 C engine with 200mm FW). With this set up, I would need to use the 356 741 trans shift forks with a 356 C throwout bearing. I'm not sure if anyone does this work to the starters anymore. Another option seems to be: Modify the ring gear on the 356 C FW. Press and weld on a 12V ring gear to the 356 C FW. The 356 C FW could also be machined to VW specs 21mm vrs 24mm and the stock VW 200mm Pressure Plate and throw out bearing be used. Does anyone know a machine shop that could do this mod to the 356C FW? Happy New Year to everyone! AJ |

Why?
Is this trip REALLY necessary? Couldn't you just put the crest on the hood and pretend? All kidding aside, The write up looks good, but the sheet metal fabrication part is a bit sketchy. IMHO find a successful conversion ( or something close) and take a bunch of pictures. The clutch interface seems to be the tricky part.

Make love, Not Warcraft
World of Warcraft Power Levelling? What on earth does this have to do with a VW / Porsche engine conversion? You want me to pay real money to get an advantage in an imaginary world? Get a life.

![]() it's a waste to put a 356 engine into a thing. what do you hope to gain from doing it |
