i have a beetle with 901 box, cant get engine started???
hi guys, i bought a project beetle, with a 901 gearbox in it and have a beetle engine that im trying to fit.
the engine and flywheel fits into the bell housing ok, but the starter wont contact it. the engine came out of a bay and has the large 280mm flywheel. ive been told to use porsche starter. ive also been told to use 912 flywheel. but i went to look at a 912 a mate of mine has. it has beetle engine. but the flywheel is the same width (280) and depth (37 mm away from engine case to edge of flywheel tooth nearest gearbox) can you guys tell me something- is the 912 flywheel the same as the type 2(bay) 280 mm flywheel. is there anyone out there that could help me with this? ![]() |

Hmm, 280 mm (!) Maybe a typo here as Type 2 (incl Vanagons get the 228mm flywheel).
A self supported starter from a semi auto beetle will work nicely. No issues. If you like Kennedy Engineering have them (Kennedy Engineered Products) Rgds, Jim |

grind a bit(3/8 or so) off of the starter, where it makes contact with the bellhousing, so that when the gear kicks it out it catches more of the flywheel teeth.
