FS 1986 951 Suspension for VW type 1
I'd hoped to hold on to these for a future project, but oh well. I've got over $2300 invested and it took me almost a year to gather everything. You can get a good deal and an immediately functional setup.
This is a complete setup, sans brake pads. The spring plates, trailing arms, axles, rotors, and front hubs are from an '86 944 Turbo. The calipers are from a 1990 944 Turbo and are 4 pot fixed calipers made by Brembo (cast into the back if you want to show off). The rotors are brand new, top quality, Zimmermann rotors, made in Germany. They are black powdercaoted for beauty. These have an internal drum parking brake nested inside the rear disc, and have the modified swan to allow the use of type 1 parking brake cables. The transmission output flanges are from a Thing and will let this setup work on any type 1. The front spindles are OE VW balljoint spindles and have been modified by Lanner at VDUB Engineering; he also modified the front hubs to accept standard type 1 bearings (new bearings, seals, and lock nut installed). Like I said, this is a nearly complete, ready to roll setup. If you're interested, we might be able to work a deal for me to install everything. All you need to be rollin' like a pimp are brake pads, wheels and a weekend. |
I probably should have mentioned a price. I'd like to get 1600 but am willing to negotiate.

Probably a dumb question but how far off would this be from working on a type 3 fastback ?
Thanks |
Hi. I'm not entirely sure. From what I've read, the rear trailing arms are the same on types 1 and 3, so the back end should bolt up. The front of this system is built on type 1 spindles, so you'd have to adapt them to fit; I'm not sure if that's tough or trivial. Are the ball joints the same? If so it might not be too tough.

The spindle bearings race dimensions is the same in type 1 & 3 you have to make a new adapter.Rear end is straightforward no suprises....
Good luck |
