porsche powered crewcab

First time I noticed this Tech sight. I have a '68 crewcab w/2.4 E carburetored motor w/915 tranny. A very tight fit. Also had a '57 chop top/rag top bug w/2110 cc motor and 901/5 speed trans. I bought the bug already built so can't help with any tranny installation info. My goal for the crewcab was to have the conversion look like a factory job. As few modifications to the engine and tranny as possible to get it to fit. The only thing we ended up altering was the rear eng. mount. The truck weighs 2500 lbs., about the same as '73 911's, so the performance is pretty good. It is an "E" motor but someone put in "T" p&c so I figure the h..p. is around 160. Sometime next year I'll go through the motor and get the h.p. to around 200 - 225.

cool, I'm finishing of a '54 beetle with a 1700 914 engine and a 901 tranny.
tranny install is prety strait forward.

901 trans install

I have a 65 bug and the complete rear torsion off a 1967 911s.
I have the five speed 901 trans and would love to have a 5speed in my bug. Can you give me any details of installation? I was wondering if I could use the disc brakes also,IAN

944 brakes are an easy swap, not to sure about the 911

there are a couple sites around that have info on this swap, but sheck out Shoptalk forums lots of people there that are doing this very thing.

As far as brakes on the Crewcab I'm using front disk assemblies from a '73 van (straight bolt on) and '73 rear drums. Used a Wilwood brake bias to balance the fronts to the rear. The front calipers are the same size as the Porsche SC calipers, though the offset is different. But it appears you could use any of the Porsche SC pads. I run Mercedes 6x15 wheels (similar look to the AMG) with 205 front, 215 rears. I'm doing research into fitting front & rear coil overs w/adjustable shocks to better the ride.

Hope some one can help, I have a '67 split camper want to fit 16" fuchs (6" up front, how wide can i go at back) better brakes (Can i fit 944 turbo brakes) and a big engine (flat six or big type 4?)

ViolentBlue 02-24-2003 10:33 PM

944 turbo brakes will bolt up on the rear with spacer between the nut and hub. on the fron you can either adapt the porsche hub to accept the vw inner bearing and te spindle to accept the porsche outer bearing (thats how its done on a beetle ball joint front end) and fabricate a caliper adaptor.

not being sure of the bus spindle dimentions and such, I'd recomend having a completly new hub machined up, to use the bus bearings.

To see a few pictures of the Crewcab go to www.vintagebus.com. Go to the gallery index and scroll down to Porsche 911 powered bay.
