not_hans_stuck can build things way better than many of us could dream of.
It is good to see men with large cojones, tackling with these type of projects.
Whats up with graph this and graph that obsession? ha? ^^^^^^^

Yeah. Now that I look at it again it's pretty wierd looking. All I did to build the graph was plot the speeds every 200 rpm. And, as it happened, some of those speeds were slightly slower than the previous one. This is only an approximation done quickly in XL to get a feel.

The big problem I have with it is 2nd gear at 6k in my car is 60+ not 48. So, evidently, that gear is different.

Thanks. When I can't work on the car, I think about the car, and, in this case, I was thinking about the gearbox and how I could modify the gearsets to better fit the torque curve of a v8. That, of course, led to the question, how does the gearbox behave now, which led to this graph.

As it turns out, this was nothing more than a time sink.

Having researched the price of gears and final drive ratios the price of building the perfect gearbox could easily exceed the price of the rest of the project. So, that's on a backburner. I'll just throw new synchro's in it and call it a day.

Hal,

FYI, my 1989 G50 will just make 60 in second gear at redline.

It won't live unless you baby it.....you need a 930 or a G50.

It's not the horsepower......transmissions are torque multipliers.

Torque will oblong the bearing carrier housing, even after reinforcement.

well i was making about 350ftlbs too... its only been about three months but i havn't had issues yet...

well we shall see. also keep in mind with the turbo, power eases in at more like 4krpm not 1500, and i NEVER launch the car. i am not too worried about it, but if it breaks than so be it, i will move to a g50.

Lukesportsman 01-21-2012 08:21 PM

Any truth to torque pulses vs overall torque output? That an uneven fire V6 is tougher than a flat 6 on a transmission and that a "equally" powered v8 or v10 would be less so because of more pulses to get equal sum.

Think single phase vs three phase electrical motors...same thought apply? If this is so, and I partially agree that it does in respect to certain internal parts: a 300 ftlb flat 6 is similar to a 400ftlb V8 in regards to splines or bearings?

Kyle Saenz 01-21-2012 08:28 PM

^if that's the case then he should be fine!!! i vote run the 915 and just be easy on it. When/if it lets go just do the g50/930 swap. Who knows the 915 could last a few years.

not_hans_stuck 01-24-2012 01:59 AM

There must be something different. Toyjet drag races his car. And he has over 600 hp from a supercharged LS motor. Hes been doing that for years with no issues and his car has a standard rebuilt 915. No sideplate no bearing retainer plate.

Besides, honestly, theresno budget for a g50 swap. Patrick racing wants 13k for their shortnose g50. And, if i were to do it, i'd put a Mendeola S5 sequential box in it.

We'lljust see what happens.

Thanks. My 915 did too,so the second gear chart is wrong.

Frapjious Day!

Pulling the motor today.

First thing I did was put the car on scales.

Here's the data.

2566 Total

LF 481 RF 487
LR 804 RR 797

F Bias 37.6%
R Bias 62.3%

LF-RR Diagonal - 1281/49.8%
RF-LR Diagonal - 1290/50.1%

Gas on E, no Driver, Oil Full.

Didn't get started till after noon, so we made pretty good progress. Everything is done except for the CV joints. They were stuck hard, so they're soaking in PB Blaster.

I also removed both bumpers, the oil tank and the thermostat.

Here's the photo.

I ran a C2 Turbo motor with @ 450hp on the track very hard for many years on a bone stock 915 with zero issues.
