996 Gear Box swap
Hello folks,
Has anyone converted / swapped an early 911 to a 996 transmission? I have a 73 911 (wide body/ slant nose conversion) with a 930 gearbox matted to a SBC that I plan to convert to a 996 gearbox /transmission and an LS3 motor. I'm an old school hot rod guy that loves the concept. Looking for any advice on the swap, pics or anything else that may help. Thank you in advance, John |
Go to GT40 forum. Look in SLC section. I'm currently building a Ford GT with a 996tt box. Gbox was building such with your typical 996 box with great outcomes. It's certainly cheaper than a 930 box. The 996TT or 6GT2 box has better gear ratios, but cost more.
I know some 914 guys have used Boxster or Cayman boxes and I've considered the upgrade for my 914/8 but also have a 930 box for the car already to elminate the 901 Renegade tall gear box. |
Luke S, thank you very much for your reply. After much consideration, I'm going to stick with the 930 box that is already in the car to avoid all the additional fab work to make the 996 fit/work. Additionally, the 996 that I have is not a 996TT, which would require quite a bit of work to make it more robust; LSD diff ect.

Been down this road to much work was needed so i went with a subaru transaxle

Update. Sold the 930 gear box and I'm going with the 996 6 speed. Got the adapters and coil over conversion to remove the torsion bar. I'm committed now... will update as the project comes along. I have a few other projects (non-car related) that need to be checked off before I can get to this one full time.

Not sure if yours is the same, but there's a sticky at the top of the page with info. on gear ratios, etc.
