What if it were English (British)? Simply magnificent? I think it would be nice to see a picture with the head lamps retracted, in essence accentuating the fine lines up front. Not a great picture this from my memory of one.

Hey Bernie...thanks for reaching out🙂

So I'm thinking about getting an r33 BUT I'm not sure what to look out for as far as problem areas?
Mechanically the cars seem to be pretty robust but is there any known problems to look for?
I've read that rust can be an issue but pretty much limited to the trunk area from bad seals?
Are replacement parts readily available in the US?
Are replacement part overly expensive (like Porsche)?
Do I need to find someone that specializes in Skylines to do the repairs?

I'm on the southern east coast and the car culture here is not the same as if I were on the west coast..finding people relatively close is sometimes pretty difficult...

Thanks for any advice...
Btw my wife thinks it would be cool to find 1 in Japan and go through the process of having it shipped here.
I think we'd be better to find 1 that's already in the states...
What's your thoughts?

Lots of good questions Steve, and I don't think I can answer all of them in confidence. I'll just throw my gut feeling out there, tell you what I know or think. I've been out of this game for a long time now. As you may know I brought 2 R33 GT-R to the US in say 2003? Complied them etc. through Motor-ex for a quid, then 16k a car. I negotiated 2 cars at 14k each.

So much has changed since then. I think you may be onto something as the R33 is now coming of age to meet the 25 year US rule on import. I did post something about that earlier in this (sugarwood) thread. 1995 was first production year through 98 BCNR33. Conversely speaking, the cars now almost don't exist here in Japan. Tell your wife that one. We can find them still perhaps, but I think most have been exported over the years. If you find one here it may not be cheap. They are all already over there for the most part.

I've never seen rust issues on a GT-R, I have no idea on that. I would think you could get parts here in Japan from the dealer, Nissan for a reasonable price, much better than the dogs over there selling for a profit. If I left anything out or forgot to answer please let me know. Like I said, not it the game now. If I pick up the phone and call friends who still are, I can answer more questions if need be. These are guys that are in the market, buy at auctions and know the craft on GT-R.

So right now I think my biggest concern would be having someone to repair the car...do you think my local Nissan dealership do the work?

I appreciate your thoughts..

If you review this thread there’s a dealer in VA who frequently gets Skylimes. I’ve listed some of the more interesting ones. If you want to see a car in person and drive etc might be worth a trip north for a long weekend.

The vast majority of Parts on any of the JDM cars have US market crossover. You become a bit of a detective but it’s all out there otherwise it’s just another Nissan. Any Indy looking after other high performance nissans would likely be able to care for you. It’s just a car, not a Russian rocket ship.

The place in Virginia is called Duncan imports...they actually have 1 of the skylines I want to look at...
They also have another location in Tennessee that has another 1 I wanna look at...
I get it's just a car...I'm sure not one that has been seen a whole lot around here in Beaufort SC...
Nice to know about the parts though...
I guess I have alittle bit of "detective" work to do and try n find a good indy shop...
I really appreciate your input...

Another importer is Top Rank in California...thoughts?

If they can't someone could, like Matt has said above. Now you got me going, make me want to tell stories... the blue car I posted pics of in this thread, I drove around CA and NV on a trip home. I had to come back to Japan to work, so I left it with Motor-Ex on consignment to sell. Later my Evo Lancer customer in Chicago faxed me a magazine article of some idiot who was driving my car and writing about it. He said.,. Yeah, this car belongs to some English teacher in Japan. It's hard to drive a right hand drive car and the gears keep grinding. I did nothing, just fumed!

Fast forward months later, my next trip home I walk in to Motor-ex shop unannounced and see my car in the back of the warehouse. The car was filthy, oil was filthy and lots more miles. There were rock chips in the front paint and headlamps. They had trashed my car. I walk into the owners office, Hiro and say where is my other car?? Oh we sold it. For how much I say. 48k. I say I told you 50k was my price! So I then said here is what we are going to do. You're going to write me a check for 52k, I'm going to drive my blue car straight out of here, and I'm just being nice so far. He did that immediately and that was the last time I ever spoke with him.

Fast forward. On the way to OC (Cost Mesa) I realize there was a synchro out and grinding in third gear. That pissed me off but didn't worry me much because I had 6 GT-R trannies in NV, two of which were R33. I left the car in OC, had it resprayed for 3K and next trip home drove it back to NV to hometown. There I had a local mechanic swap out the tranny with another one of my spares.

Rewind for just a second. Matt mentioned Russian above -- enter the Russians. There was a guy in Orange, OC named Vladimir who had converted an R33 GT-R to left hand drive, his company's future prospect on volume. I left the car with him to change out the tranny with the spare I'd brought back from NV on the way back through. Car was resprayed at a shop near him and a good job. Next trip home I pick up my car there only to find now there was a synchro out in 2nd! I say to Vladimir where is the tranny you took out? Oh! it's gone, we gutted it for parts. That wasn't part of our deal. I really didn't care though. They never charged me for anything, just wanted my bus. as per what I could help them with from Japan.

Fast forward to hometown NV out of Reno. I had a good mechanic swap in another of my spare trannies. This time no synchro trouble. At the time word had spread in Reno and Carson city among young JDM guys about me and parts etc.. As I was planning to put the blue car up for sale someone said there is someone interested. Turned out that the Carson City Nissan dealer was working on an R32 GT-R for a customer in So. Lake Tahoe, that had been sent/sold to them by Motor-ex for 70k. It had all kinds of mods, even a 20k stereo system and aftermarket clutch and heaps of horsepower. Problem was the bolts were fu-ked up on the flywheel and it was flopping around. Long story short, the 16 year old son of a wealthy man had this car sent back to Motor-ex for a refund and bought my blue R33 for 54k. What goes aronnd comes around!

All I can say is its good to have boots on the ground. If you don't, have someone you trust emphatically with boots on the ground. I fared well with my R33 cars, but it was risky bus. and a little bit ballsy. I wouldn't take the same risks now knowing what I do. Back then, that blue car was one of 40 cars that had entered the USA on GT-R at the time be it R32 or R33 GT-R

Feel free to ask if you want to know what market price is in Japan at auction. I will try to find out. Auction grade cars here are from one to five. Zero is a damaged repaired car at auction, or at least it used to be like that.

I picked up the phone today Steve for you after getting back from long 4 day weekend in the mountains.

Auction grade 1-2 R33 is around 3.5 million yen @ around 95-96 MY. That is bottom end auction grade/value. For a higher grade example at auction you can just about double that! Don't forget you got 10% tax on top of that and about a grand extra for buyer and agent FOB price (freight on board roll on roll off). Then you got freight charge on top of that, maybe another grand before you clear it/land it on your end. These are fairly reliable numbers and current from friend of mine (Englishman) who buys a sh-t load of cars at auction and exports all over the world. For what it's worth...

Hey Bernie...
Your stories kinda scare me a little...
The closest indy shop that could take care of an r32 is about 1.5hrs away from me..
That means not close enough to just stop in and as we both know people act stupid when a cool car is around...

Thanks for reaching out to your friend..by those prices it's seems to be easiest to just find 1 that's already in the states...

We've located a few we want to look at..
1 in Tennessee 1 in Virginia and 1 in California...

I'm leaning to the 1 in Virginia only about 10hrs from me looks to be well maintained..
Only catch is they aren't open to the general public right now ( thanks covid...lol)...

Either way I'm not in a huge hurry maybe 1st of the year I'll get serious about finding 1...

Thanks again Bernie for the insight it's very much appreciated...

Good idea on your part. I would think the majority of cars over there were bought here/landed there when the market was much better over years. Now the supply here has run dry and market drives it up, including domestic bidders and those bidding abroad through agents here at auctions. The R34 which you can't bring in is reaching 5 figures, so go figure! Boots on the ground and see the car in person, best bet. The economy there with Covid reach is also on your side. Good luck!

bernie
