Rebuilt Magnesium 8:31 915 W/Wevo Bearing retainer

Hi,

I have a rebuilt 915. It is a magnesium box with an 8:31 r and p. It has the Wevo bearing retainer and is non LSD. Zero miles on it. I put oil in it a four years ago thinking that it would be installed - which it has not. Work was done by Response Engineering. I do not have the paperwork for it.

What should I ask for it?

As always - thanks for any help.

Start at $5k. No paperwork might hinder the sale but being an old member with good history might be enoigh to close a deal based on who you are.

Matt - thanks for the response. Wow! I had no idea that it would be worth that much.

I will try for that price. Thanks again.

$5k seems high for a non-LSD 915.

Core: $2500-3000
Bearing Plate: $275
1/2 shift sleeve: $275
3/4 shift sleeve: $295
synchros : $115x5 $575
Labor: $1000

That puts you at $4920-5420. That does not include any bearings (up to $1200 in parts) or a 5/r slider ($800). No dog teeth ($125 ea) and another $100 for a gasket kit and new nuts for the ones that can't be reused. One can easily spend $5k making a core into a good gearbox if you buy a "good used" core here. I say start at $5k and be negotiable.

Mag case 8:31s ran from 1975 through 1977 in a variety of models and I have even seen some 915/61 mag gearboxes in early productions '78 SCs. Is it mechanical speedo or electronic? The mechanical speedo is pretty rare and only 1975. I would add $500 if it's mechanical because that 8:31 was a one year only item.

Why would he warranty it? It is neither new nor guaranteed. You want a remanufactured gearbox you're going to spend double to triple my labor number and all the parts. That's a $10k gearbox. And guys who don't hang out on a diy forum are paying that.

Both the paint and broken boss are big value killers. Electronic speedo so a later box. Is thw type number fully scraped off?

if I were a buyer I would seriously question the "rebuild" given the paint. Makes zero sense; either wasn't opened or the builder didn't give two sh$ts about quality.

Not an accusation, just a perspective if I were looking to lay out the cash.

I will always listen to input. The builder is respected. My guess is it just looks beter? Magnesium cases are not the best looking.

Matt - I will look at the numbers and post, then I may repair what needs to be repaired.

There’s a lot of pock marks from corrosion. The mag in areas was really ugly before painting it. The problem is many of us treat a painted gearbox like a red fan on an engine. You won’t get my early number for it, unfortunately.

"Red fan". Can't have that.

Thanks for the guidance. I will have a mechanic I like check it. He was trained at the factory.

Thanks for all the replies. Can I repair the case? Or does it have to be replaced?

Wevo makes a widget that fixes the broken boss.

Was quoted recently roughly $5k to rebuild a 915 and add a Wevo classic shifter kit. Transmission had minor synchro issues and 120k miles.

I had the same broken piece. Ben/mb911 fixed it. He’s a pro welder. He can fix all kinds of mag, alum and steel parts.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the boss can be repaired. I find that surprising as it is magnesium.

Do I wire brush the case? How much corrosion is to much and not worth the repair?

Don't mess with it. While painted isn't desired you'll never get it properly cleaned off with it being so fresh. It will get harder to sell I suspect.
