I shouldn't have brought up that age old joke. I knew it would hurt some feelings, but I did it anyway. I guess I'm a 911 guy more than anything else. I've never once owned a 914, but does that make me snobby? I don't think so. As said, I have owned a 924 and it felt like an Audi. That's why I traded it straight across for a 71E euro 911 within a year. With all the joking going across MP forum, is it snobby to make jokes about 914s? Maybe so, but others do it all the time. Does that make them all snobs too for their humorous comments? Either way, I apologize for my jokes about Caymans, 914s and 924s. bernie

You are too easy to rile up, brother. There’s a 914 group called NARP. It stands for not a real porsche. 914 guys embrace the black sheep status.

Back in the day, those POS' were considered Porsche wannabes overloaded with VW parts. And they were. The lackluster performance and sparse interiors were just icing on the secretary's cupcake; and a cupcake that rusted quickly too, I might add. I plead guilty to being a 914 hater from day one. No style, no power, V-dub engine and a boatload of parts. I seem to remember you could just bring it to a VW dealership for service. Of course, I justified my superiority back then because I was almost driving a 911; a 912, another car to look down upon. But I came around (or grew up?) as has the market, almost. I think it would be fun to own a 2.0, but I'd rather have a 6 cylinder in it. I'm all about the fun factor and ease of maintenance these days. Must be the age thing. (quit looking up my skirt Rawknees!)

Wait, I thought we were talking about cars....
I'm sure there is a forum somewhere for what you're talking about, I don't know if Nick is there but someone is. ---Adam

y'all funny.
much like raw's vaunted 930 needs serious mods to unlock the true performance of that car, so does the 914. it's apparent most of you haven't ever driven a properly modded and set up 914 with good suspension and HP. it's faster, nimbler, and better handling than the 911: mid-engine balance, light, and low CG. it's like cheating. and i'm a devout 911 guy! but in all honesty, the 914 is a sick platform for a "sports car"...

So true, and that's one of the things that makes laugh when some peeps post comments about how this or that should not be changed from stock because the Porsche engineers knew best. Nonsense! Last edited by Rawknees'Turbo; 02-26-2020 at 11:24 AM.. |

I think the 914 is slow enough that the excessive body roll doesn't have much effect on the overall AX time, provided the driver can handle getting tossed around like a beach ball. It probably doesn't make it much slower, though it probably feels faster in a Mr.-Toad's-Wild-Ride seasickness kind of way. Quote:

Seems about time for this old classic...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtwJvgPJ9xw I'll remark about historical VW vs Porsche elitism some other time. I've always found it laughable, especially the 914. Mericans always seem to forget that they were co-branded as a VW-Porsche in Europe, but made Porsches for marketing reasons here. The motorsports pedigree of the 914-6 is solid. If VW hadn't overcharged for the rolling chassis, we would likely have seen a proper S version of it, but the car was just too expensive to make and was just as much as a 911 once they put the engine in it. It didn't make dollars sense.

RE M2"s comments - the VW connection didn't bother me too much when I was driving mine (in my late teens and very early twenties - one of the two suitable age groups for 914 motoring), but I did get a lot of ribbing about it. However, most of my acquaintances did not have anywhere near as cool a car, which I was always quick to point out to the ribbers. I was just glad to be able to have a Porsche that I could somewhat afford to buy and own (textbook example of the 914 being a poor man's Porsche - enabled by the Briggs and Stratton power plant, of course).
I've always thought they looked cool, in a oddball way, but they are just far to skinny for me - they look way better with flares, as do 911s. And then there is the engine that is pathetically wimpy , if not built to an extremely high, hand grenade level - still wimpy, however, next to a blown six. First Porsche I ever got a ride in was a white 1970 914-6 our neighbor owned. He was a pilot for Pan Am.
I agree on the styling part. I love the Karmann Ghia. I always saw the914 as an “update” to it that didn’t quite work. It was too boxy but pop up headlights and mid engine were so so cool. They need the softening of GT flares to start to look like something of interest.
